Kara Eaker had been a growing presence in the US gymnastics scenes. The 21-year-old had climbed the ladder to earn numerous accolades to her name. From balance beam champion titles in 2018 and 2019 to being an alternative at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Eaker had etched out a path well for her future in the gymnastics arena.
However, just as the youngster was carrying out her career, Eaker announced her retirement from the sport; stating that over the course of two years, the gymnast had been a victim of ‘verbal and emotional’ abuse. Kara’s untimely retirement and the story behind called for a response not just from the spectators online, but also from the University the gymnast belonged to.
University of Utah announces follow-up measures

On the 21st of November, the University announced that there would be a ‘change in the leadership of the gymnastics program.‘ The measure was a step ahead following allegations of ab****e training tactics used by the now-former coach. Tom Farden, the coach began his career back in 1999 in Missouri. It was only in 2011 that Farden joined as an Assistant Coach in Utah. After serving five years in the post, he moved up to be a co-head and ultimately the head coach. However, as of 21st November 2023, the title has been taken off Farden.
“Changes like this are never easy and only come after extensive analysis and discussion. In this case, the decision provides necessary clarity and stability for our student-athletes and prevents further distraction from their upcoming season,” Mark Harlan, Director of Athletics said in a release.

Kara Eaker voices her concern
About a month ago, 21-year-old Kara penned an Instagram note talking about her retirement. The post also entailed her experience as a gymnast at the University of Utah for 2 years. The post read, ?”For two years, while training with the Utah Gymnastics Team, I was a victim of verbal and emotional abuse. As a result, my physical, mental, and emotional health has rapidly declined?.?

Kara’s steps promoted a response from many other gymnasts who underwent a similar experience. Nonetheless, the collective voice brought about a recognition from the authorities following. Tom Farden, with the pertaining decision also made a remark. “I am grateful to the University of Utah for the privilege of coaching its storied gymnastics program,” said Farden. He further added that he remains proud of the gymnasts and wishes them well.
