With six Olympic medals, Aly Raisman is one of the most decorated gymnasts. Her incredible career includes leading the U.S. women’s gymnastics teams to Olympic gold in both 2012 (the “Fierce Five”) and 2016 (the “Final Five”)—a position held by only two gymnasts in the country for over 15 years. In addition to her professional feats, Raisman has become a well-known proponent of positive body image, persistently promoting perseverance and self-confidence.

The gymnastics phenomenon has recently gained attention from the media once more, but this time around for her unanticipated foray into the realm of sports, serving as an ESPN college gymnastics analyst.

Aly Raisman is starting a new and exciting chapter in her life. The sports world is abuzz with news of her joining ESPN as a collegiate gymnastics commentator. The announcement was made public on Instagram by @gymnasticsnow with the caption: “Aly Raisman is joining ESPN as a commentator, and her first meet will be Kentucky vs. LSU this Friday alongside John Roethlisberger!”

“I probably haven’t watched this much since I was eight years old, and I was watching the ‘96 Olympics over and over again. I feel like a little kid again.” she told People.com. On January 19, 2024, the three-time Olympic gold medalist will make her debut switching sides at the gymnastics arena. Raisman will be accompanied by former Olympian John Roethlisberger in the live broadcast on SEC Network. Although encouraging, the internet was taken aback by her putting another feather to her crown while some were excited about her flexibility outside of gymnastics.

The fans’ reaction to the announcement

Aly Raisman’s entry into the world of sports commentary shows her influence goes beyond the mats, however, a few commenters argued underlining broadcasting skills. Someone questioned, “I wonder if ESPN requires an education for her to do this? Or is it based on her status?” To which one replied, “It takes more than knowledge to do a good broadcast.”

“20 years in gymnastics and world and olympic titles isn’t enough for her to share commentary on skills she mastered and surpassed?” the argument continued with another addition in Raisman’s support. “Good call. A pro with poise in all domains,” wrote a fan in confidence. The gymnastics legend’s surprise career change excited many leaving others in doubt while she continues to inspire and create new ground in the sports world and beyond.
