Apart from gymnastics and football matches, Simone Biles and her husband, Jonathan Owens’s presence in the basketball games is quite noteworthy. Throughout this time, the gymnast has been showing her support for Houston Rockets, the Southwest division basketball program. In the past, the couple have graced the audience seat in Rockets’ games several times. However, the program is right now in 2nd place in the Western Conference and also thwarted the Lakers’ challenge this week. But recently, both Jonathan and Simone showed up in a basketball game where the Houston Rockets were not on the list. Then?

On Friday night, the Oklahoma City Thunder and New York Knicks locked horns in Madison Square Garden. This was the second time the squads met each other on the court. Yet the match received a lot of hype. The reason? Possibly, it was the potential final matchup this season. Furthermore, for Thunder’s Isaiah Hartenstein, it was the homecoming. The former Knick was at the helm of the center position. So, expectations were high for him. Could he impress Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens?

Not really. The Thunder’s center couldn’t win Jonathan’s vote, despite leading his team to achieve victory. Instead, he showed his support for the Thunder’s point guard. How? Friday, after the game between the Knicks and Thunder, Simone Biles’s husband shared his Instagram story, calling Shai Gilgeous-Alexander a “problem.” In the Instagram story, the NFL safety wrote, “Shai is a problem,” sharing Shai’s snap in the story. But what did Shai do in the game?

The 26-year-old Toronto-born has been the key player throughout the season. The MVP candidate of the Oklahoma City Thunder has the honor of surpassing 1,000 points as the only player this season. Last night, he continued that form. The point guard took 29 minutes to score 39 points against the Knicks. The blitzkrieg stood too big for the rivals. They couldn’t stand it and they had to accept defeat. Simone and Jonathan witnessed Shai’s masterful work sitting in the front row. They had the chance to watch the season’s highest scorer’s destruction on the court. That may have impressed Owens, and he took SGA’s name as the best player of the night. Apart from that, the date night remained in the way as the couple wanted.

They giggled together, had sumptuous brunch, and in the end, watched the MVP candidate reigning in MSG. What could have been better than this on a perfect date night? Well, something could have been. A seamless experience in a packed-up basketball arena! Did the couple have that on Friday night?

Simone Biles doesn’t want the limelight every time. The most decorated gymnast has had enough of it. She doesn’t need it anymore. Perhaps she has never wanted it. Everything followed her with her achievements. But now, it has touched the ceiling. That’s why she had to come forward to stop the menace. Last week, in SI’s award ceremony, Simone said, “It might be a surprise to a lot of you guys to hear this, but I really don’t like being in the limelight, the center of the room. But it tends to happen to me a lot.” She said this from the stage where she was recognized as the Sportsperson of the Year. Later she also added, “I’m really uncomfortable with public speaking, so trust me when I tell you I’d rather be competing on a 4-inch beam in front of you guys.”

Last night, Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens graced the audience box. But the limelight didn’t follow them. Instead, Eli Manning took the most limelight during the break. The cameras didn’t circulate over Biles and Owens. In the meantime, they earned moments to spend together, enjoying the game without caring about anyone’s gaze. Isn’t that the cherry on the top? Simone’s statements are already making an impact.
