After the Tokyo Olympics debacle, Simone Biles didn’t even want to look at her gymnastics gear. She used her guest bedroom to stash away her leotards, Team USA pins, and all other equipment. But when her husband, Jonathan Owens, was not home, she would occasionally open her forbidden Olympics closet and weep while reliving how her Tokyo Olympics dreams slipped away. She was living in the past…

Slowly, she got back to the gym. Not to practice, but to watch. Look around. Sometimes, she bounced on the trampoline, and other days, she would work on the most basic skills. Then, there were times she would practice twice and day and disappear for weeks. But she would come back every time. So when the Paris Olympics was inching closer, and Biles went to her coaches and told them about her aspirations, their response was simple. No!

“I think they were just worried,” Biles felt. “Mentally, could I do it, and if I don’t do it, would that break me?”

But eventually, Simone Biles rediscovered her love for the sport. She practiced, cleared the trials, went to Paris, and earned three gold medals and one silver. It was easier said than done, though. While she invented so many skills in gymnastics, trusting herself all over again was the most difficult part.

In a new interview with Sports Illustrated, she stated, “You do feel like you have to accomplish something, and that has weight that you carry, and nobody realizes that. It’s hard, and it’s not always fun. So we have to really remember why we’re doing it, who we’re doing it for, and if this is really an enjoyable experience that we can look back on in a couple years.”

If Tokyo was proving something to the world; taking a stand for herself, Paris was about proving something to herself. But about L.A. 2028? Does she have a reason to return?

“Life and death,” she told SI. “Because I’ve accomplished so much, there’s almost nothing left to do, rather than to just be snobby and to try again, and for what? I’m at a point in my career where I’m humble enough to know when to be done.”

Simone Biles: Is prioritizing family over gymnastics the ultimate gold medal in life?

Have an interesting take?

“If you go back, you’ll be greedy. Those are the consequences. But that’s also your decision to decide. What sacrifices would be made if I go back now? When you’re younger, it’s like, prom, college. Now it’s like, starting a family, being away from my husband. What’s really worth it?

Simone Biles doesn’t have the answer yet. But she also hasn’t come to terms with her legacy.

“I don’t think the reality has set in of what I’ve exactly done in the sport. I can see it, and I hear it from people, and I see a glimpse of it, but the full magnitude I don’t think I’ve realized just yet. I don’t think I’ll realize ’til maybe I retire and look back in a couple years like, Damn, she was good. Because I can see that, but I do it every day. So for me, it’s normal.”

When Biles was asked about retirement in August 2024, she stated, “Never say never. The next Olympics is at home, so you just never know. But I am getting really old.” It’s clear she’s keeping the door open, but she is not rushing into anything either.

It seems like family is at the top of her priority list right now. Since marrying Jonathan Owens in 2023, Biles spent a lot of time apart from her husband due to their careers; he’s in the NFL, and she’s on the gymnastics mat. But now, she’s trying hard to balance everything: Supporting his NFL career, planning for their future, and carving out time to be with him. But when is Biles planning to have kids?

Is Simone Biles planning for parenthood before the 2028 Olympics?

After her historic performances at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Simone Biles was soaking it all in. She wasn’t thinking about the future just yet; she wanted to enjoy the moment. However, just a couple of days later, in an interview on the ‘Today’ show in August, she disclosed what was on the next stage. And when Hoda Kotb pressed the question of having children, Simone Biles revealed that she and her husband, Jonathan Owens, an NFL player for the Chicago Bears, discussed the matter.

Yes, me and Jonathan always talk about kids and he would have had them yesterday if he could have,” Biles said. But she further added, “We both have things we want to do before we start a family,” she said. Regarding the 2028 LA Olympics, for instance, Simone Biles will already be 31 by then.

What is quite interesting is that while Biles did not encourage it, she also did not discourage it. “I think kids would be amazing,” Simone said earlier this year. “It’s one of the most amazing feelings in the world, what I’ve heard, but I do get that it becomes a job, and it’s hard.

Now we don’t know what the couple is planning or when and how they will start their family. For now, Simone Biles is content being an NFL WAG and a proud aunt to her niece, Ronni Biles, who has also started dabbling with gymnastics. It will be interesting to see what Biles and Owens have ahead for themselves. What do you think?
