Carlos Yulo’s younger brother, Karl Eldrew Yulo, is following in his Olympic brother’s footsteps. Just like Carlos, Karl has trained under the guidance of Kugimiya Munehiro, a name familiar to those who know Carlos’s journey. In his teenage years, Carlos honed his skills under the Japanese master and achieved phenomenal success. Now it’s Karl’s turn, and he’s making his mark. Recently, he clinched multiple gold medals at the JRC Artistic Stars Championships in Thailand, and in recognition of his achievements, he received an unexpected prize.
Noticing his extraordinary talent, Chavit Singson has announced an $8,000 incentive for the gymnastics phenom. Notably, after the Paris Olympics episode, the Filipino businessman announced an incentive for Carlos as well. Another similarity! But apart from these shining resemblances, there is a gloomy past that once shaped the brothers. Additionally, the timeline also shows the impact of their parents. How? Let’s dive deeper.

Coming from a humble background in a Southeast Asian country doesn’t guarantee financial independence. Moreover, the distressed situation often nips the homegrown talent in the bud. But fortunately, the Yulo siblings didn’t have to face such a crisis. No, they weren’t born with the golden spoon in their mouth. Rather, they also had to face the vicious fangs of poverty. Nonetheless, the credit goes to Angelica and her husband, Mark Andrew Yulo, for giving their kids a sustainable childhood. How? The younger brother explained, “Our life was hard. They never made us feel that we were having a hard time; like, they still have food that they put on the table.” And if you believe him, Angelica Yulo (née Poquiz) had a major role in holding the rice bowl in front of their hungry mouths.
Recently, Carlos Yulo’s brother sat with Julius Babao in the latter’s YouTube podcast. In a candid conversation, the 16-year-old shared details about their difficult childhood, highlighting Angelica’s efforts to bring joy to their lives during tough times. He spoke fondly of how their mother worked tirelessly to make ends meet. Initially, she took up a job in an undisclosed location, but later ventured into the food business. Eventually, she expanded into selling ready-made garments. According to Karl Eldrew, Angelica has been working in various capacities for two to three decades. In fact, she often juggled multiple jobs to manage the household expenses

In the podcast, the budding gymnast said, “She was like a messenger in a company, Travel and Tours, there at Baywalk… So that she can feed us, to the family.” And while narrating these parts, Karl Eldrew also mentioned Angelica’s streaming profession to sell things online. Aren’t those jobs too many for someone who belongs to a middle-class background in a Southeast Asian country? Yes, it is. But Angelica had to carry out those to give a better “lifestyle” to her children. However, now the mother of three talented kids is going through a storm of criticism. The credit goes to her Olympian son.
Carlos Yulo’s accusations put Angelica in hot water
On August 7 this year, Angelica Yulo appeared in front of the cameras to express her side. In the press conference, the teary-eyed mother said, “Son, I am sorry. I understand some may think I’m only speaking now because of your success. I ask for your forgiveness as a concerned mother. You are mature enough to make your own decisions. Our door is always open, regardless of your financial status.” But what led to such a situation? Rather, it should have been a positive atmosphere, as a few days before it, Carlos Yulo earned double victories at the Paris Olympics.

Nonetheless, a few things changed the entire scenario. It started with Carlos’s video, shared on TikTok. In the video, the Olympian accused his mother of embezzling his earnings. He pointed at his incentives from the 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. Meanwhile, in the video, he elaborated, “The 70,000 pesos (US$1,221) incentives she mentioned from the World Championships in 2021, first of all, it was actually in 2022. I didn’t just receive 70,000 pesos; I know it was a six-digit amount because I won two medals.” That was a serious allegation!

However, Angelica put her justification, keeping herself above the blame. “The money was given to me,” the matriarch of the Yulo family added. “As a mother, I was worried that my child might have financial problems in the future. So I invested it under my name.” That failed to douse the complicated situation, though. Meanwhile, Carlos had to step into a bitter verbal exchange with his mother. Now, more than 80 days later, the fire is still burning.
