At the U.S. Olympic Trials on June 26, 2024, Skye Blakely’s hopes to go to Paris with Team USA were dashed. She tore her Achilles when she misstepped on a floor exercise. “It was devastating,” Blakely said of being carried off the floor in tears. The doctors at first estimated a six-to-nine-month recovery, but Skye set her mind on proving the estimates wrong. Two weeks post-surgery, she had her sights on competing in the NCAA season opener. Relentless rehabilitation driven by Florida’s medical staff and her coaches made it real.

In an emotional Instagram post, Skye let her feelings and struggles about recovery be known. “199 days after rupturing my Achilles, I was able to make my NCAA debut as a Gator! So extremely blessed and grateful for God to allow me to experience this moment,” she wrote. She thanked her parents, teammates, coaches, and the Gators’ medical staff who stood by her throughout the difficult times, saying, “This recovery has had many tears, a lot of hard work, patience, and growing.”

Finally, Skye returned to competition on January 12, 2025, in front of a raucous crowd at the O’Connell Center. As she breathed in and readied herself for her uneven bars routine, her nerves didn’t get the better of her, and she nailed a good performance for a score of 9.725. That was beside the point. The moment meant the world: her triumphant return to the sport she loves. “I was proud of myself.

“The recovery and PT were not easy,” Skye said. “To be back here, knowing I’ve worked so hard, is everything.”

What this comeback means for the Florida Gators

Skye’s return isn’t just a personal victory. It’s a major boost for the Florida Gators. A two-time World Champion with Team USA and a member of the U.S. Senior National Team since 2021, Skye brings international experience and undeniable skill to the team. Her collegiate debut not only marked a milestone in her recovery but also bolstered the Gators’ roster at a critical time. Head Coach Jenny Rowland lauded Skye’s determination: “There was zero doubt she’d be back. The moment she stepped into the gym, you could tell she was on a mission.” That will add some texture and resilience to a Gators squad already known to be fierce in competition.

Skyelar also said that it has also fired up some of the teammates around her, among whom are a senior and an older sister. Sloane Blakely. Of the team and a desire to spend a senior season competing alongside her sister is just one of many things that has made this a quicker recovery process, Skye insisted. “Just having my sister here supporting and encouraging me every day is super special”.

But there is not all good news on the Gators’ roster. Teammate Kayla DiCello, who suffered a similar Achilles injury during the Olympic Trials, will be red shirting the season. Skye acknowledges the bond they share: “It’s comforting to have someone who knows exactly how you feel, not just about the injury but about the heartbreak.”

Skye Blakely’s journey from the devastating injury to her NCAA debut is one of resilience, determination, and support. Her comeback cements her status as one of the sport’s rising stars while showcasing the strength of the Florida Gators’ gymnastics program. The workload for Skye is not yet over. “I’m still on the road to full recovery and only up from here,” she said. And as long as her goal is to continue improving, Skye and the rest of the Gators are looking to the future with brightness. Her message is clear, though. And its setbacks don’t define you. How you rise from them does. Skye Blakely has risen, and she’s just getting started. Catch Skye and the Gators this season in further disregard for expectation!
