“Gymnastic continues to be changing and more and more complex and a more and more difficult sport.” – Bela Karolyi marveled over how the sport he loved had progressed over the years. However, the legendary coach had left a significant impact on the role. When he took over as USA’s women’s national gymnastics team’s head coach, he paved the way for the squad’s dominance over the sport. Even after the Hall of Famer retired, he ensured he kept up with every development gymnastics went through.

While his legacy surpasses him, the coach was known the most for being Nadia Comaneci‘s coach. Under his guidance, the Romanian etched her name in history, becoming the first Olympic gymnast to earn a perfect 10. While a few more followed suit since then, nothing will ever top that accomplishment. Even though the duo haven’t worked together in years, his prodigy couldn’t help but remark on his incredible legacy recently.

The charismatic coach was responsible for making the U.S. an international gymnastics powerhouse. Unfortunately, on November 15, he passed away aged 82. Shortly after, USA Gymnastics confirmed the news, but no cause of death was mentioned. Given how he helped guide the gymnast to Olympic glory, Nadia Comaneci was shattered by the news. Saddened, the 63-year-old paid tribute to the legendary coach by sharing a few images of the duo on X, captioned, “A big impact and influence in my life RIP Bela Karolyi🙏🙏🙏”

Karolyi first discovered the gymnast when she was six and took him under his wing. With his guidance and training, he helped the Romanian create history at the 1976 Games. In fact, she became one of the greatest gymnasts in history. The 63-year-old received a perfect 10.0 after a flawless routine on the uneven bars, clinching her maiden Olympic gold at 14. The Comaneci still maintains that it changed her life forever. The coach led her to another gold at the 1980 Moscow Games but parted ways shortly after.

However, while Nadia Comaneci mourned the loss of an influential figure in her life, the gymnastics community wasn’t as forgiving. Bela Karolyi and his wife Marta shifted their base to the U.S. in 1981. Why is that, you ask? They began working with Mary Lou Retton that same year. In fact, under their guidance, she became the first American to secure the Olympic all-around title at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Additionally, the duo played a huge part in transforming the national gymnastics team, taking it to new heights over the next few years.

Despite that, fans weren’t too keen on honoring the legend. Many were hesitant to remember the 82-year-old in a positive light. Even his wife wasn’t given that grace. While a few refused to give Karolyi’s passing much thought at all. Yet, Nadia Comaneci’s tribute led to a few reiterating his legacy, recognizing him as a Titan of the sport. They couldn’t help but acknowledge his importance in the sport’s history and were heartbroken. But why did this news bring out such a mixed reaction?

Karolyi’s coaching legacy wasn’t spotless

Even though the Karolyi’s helped train several Olympic champions. However, the Romanian’s incredible legacy was complicated for several reasons. Years after he retired, several gymnasts labeled his methods as too extreme. In fact, a throwback clip from 1990 showcases how the late coach Bela Karolyi believed nothing great could be achieved without making sacrifices. Yes, dedication and staying focused play a huge role, but sacrifices play a pivotal role.

On the other hand, the late coach held his gymnasts to a high standard. While Bela Karolyi didn’t surprise them with new skills, he expected them to train as if performing on the competition floor. Nadia Comaneci’s former coach would often train his tutees for 8 hours in the gym, albeit in two separate 4-hour shifts. But situations like this often put the legendary coach’s legacy under the microscope.

One of the most prominent career moments would be from the 1996 Olympics. After leading Nadia Comaneci to greatness, Bela Karolyi focused on shifting his focus to Kerri Strug. She prepared to compete in the team finals. However, she fell and injured her ankle on her first vault. As a result, she limped off the mat as she winced. Yet, it left many wondering if Team USA would miss out on a chance for the coveted gold. That was until the late coach told her that she needed to shake it off and give it another try.

Still in pain, the gymnast limped onto the vault runway, performing a nearly flawless routine, before she collapsed in pain shortly after. But here’s the kicker. Team USA would have won the gold regardless. When she had to receive the Olympic gold, Karolyi carried the teenager over with her leg heavily bandaged. There are several examples of his harsh training methods. Yet, despite the abrupt end to their relationship, Nadia Comaneci and the late coach continued to have an amicable relationship. Even though their legacy might remain complicated, the gymnasts will forever remember Bela Karolyi as the man who helped shape hers.
