This 19-year-old’s 2024 started off in a promising manner. She played a pivotal role in propelling the LSU Tigers to their maiden NCAA title. However, soon after that, things fell apart for the LSU star as she suffered a heartbreaking injury. The expectations and hype around the young gymnast were sky-high at the 2024 Core Hydration Classics. And she pretty much-kicked things off in her own stylish way. Coming on the beam, the 19-year-old scored an impressive 14.2 before switching to her floor warm-ups. And this is where things went north for the LSU star.

In what was a botched fall, Konnor McClain injured her Achilles leading to her Paris hopes being dashed. Escorted out of the arena, the 19-year-old has taken six agonizingly long months for the gymnast to cope with her injury. Finally, while 2024 neared its end, positive news about the teenage phenom emerged. The LSU made a statement about McClain making her return in the 2024-25 season. Despite the exact date of her return not being confirmed, the comeback news alone was like a breath of fresh air for the fans.

After all, probably Konnor McClain must have begun to hate gymnastics while she was out for so long! The 19-year-old sat down for the Gymnastics Week 2 Press Conference dated January 6, 2025. On being asked about whether she was enjoying gymnastics again, McClain replied with a vibrant ‘yes’. She looked back at her injury and thanked her teammates for having her back. Feeling different than the previous five occasions when she had surgery, McClain stated that she was in a good headspace due to all the support she received.

This was indeed a great sign for her as she did not want to revisit the horrors she had to go through sitting out and nursing her injury. Reflecting on her thought process coming into this season, McClain stated, “Definitely. Throughout the whole season, I feel like each meet got more enjoyable, and I had so much fun at the end of the season. I kind of want to continue that throughout this season.”

The 19-year-old further reflected on how happy she was being able to make a comeback and get on the mats again. McClain reminisced how she had more and more fun the previous year as the season progressed and by the time the year came to an end, the teen gymnast was enjoying her NCAA life to the fullest. Expressing her love for gymnastics, McClain stated, “But at the end of the day, I just want to be happy, and doing gymnastics makes me happy.”

She further mentioned that her primary aim this year was to continue being happy and enjoying the most minutes of her moments in the NCAA sphere. And surely, McClain’s prayers might just have been already answered. Speaking about her comeback, Coach Jay Clark made a detailed assessment of how McClain’s season may look like.
