Yul Moldauer, the 2017 US National all-around champion, repeated his 2023 Winter Cup heroics at this year’s event and won his second consecutive gold at the event. Though his moves were class apart, he has kept some of them for later. One of them is the Casina move, which we didn’t get a glimpse of this time. But why?

The 2020 Olympian put on a dominant display Sunday (25 February) to win the men’s all-around at USA Gymnastics’ Winter Cup in Louisville, Kentucky.

After Moldauer clinched the pole position on the Senior Men’s Day, Gymnastics Now caught the Olympian for a post-race chit-chat. About attempting the Casina move, the 2020 Olympian said, “I was feeling it out and you know I just wanted to go out there and hit a high bar set um so Casina is one of those weird skills where it’s like you could be doing great all week and then you’ll have a off week”. From how he put his feelings into words, the complexity of the skill came to the fore. Since maintaining the Winter Cup winning streak was also a crucial lookout, he may have ruled Casina out.

His statement further said, “I want to do it so badly you know but again it’s it’s the coach’s call and I have to respect you know what they decide to do”. At the end of the day, the coach will not only decide for Moldauer but also place him alongside his teammates to see if he’s a standout. Though Casina was not on his list, the other moves anchored him to the top flawlessly.

Moldauer’s winning moment

After two days, Moldauer finished ahead of Olympian Shane Wiskus, with a total score of 169.750. Wiskus, is not only a fellow Olympian of Moldauer but also a fellow former NCAA athlete. The second day of the competition saw the 27-year-old produce 13.050 on the high bar, and 14.400 on the floor. Moreover, he clocked 13.750 on the pommel horse and won with 14.200 on the still rings.

“I wanted to come here and prove that I’m excited for this year. I just show out there that I’m all about this year. I think I did that pretty well”, said Yul Moldauer. Eyeing the most coveted medals at the Paris Olympics, the Colorado native will look to take his team to the podium, while also counting individual wins.
