The world of gymnastics is flexible to new artistic forms but not every stunt is rewarded. Over the years the sport has given various artistic acts a stage, adding to its repertoire of skills. Just like any other ground gymnastics too demands a certain ethic that overlooks the safety practice. The International Gymnastics Federation has banned a few moves like the Korbut flip, Thomas Salto, and Roll-out. Some dangerous moves even go back decades of being banned while gymnasts continue to defy gravity for their daring performances.

Another risky practice of this nature was recently glorified on social media. Typically, events like this split the public in two, but this time, the majority of responses leaned heavily in one direction.

An Instagram reel of Brazilian artistic gymnast, Fl?via Lopes Saraiva, performing a front aerial without bending her knees went viral. The video posted by @gymnastics.addiction read, “It’s IMPOSSIBLE to do a front aerial without bending the landing leg.” Snippets from international gymnastics competitions like the 2015 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Glasgow and Liverpool among others featured in the video.

Not only was the dialogue emphasized a few seconds into her performance, a slideshow with her name was also displayed above the question “YOU SURE ABOUT THAT?.” The senior elite international gymnast has represented her country in multiple Olympics, winning three golds at the Pan American Games last year. Standing at just 4’4″ Saraiva cemented her name at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics appearing seventh in the women’s balance beam.

The aerial stunt came to light just days after the ?Dead Loop? resurfaced after getting banned in 1972. Just in case it’s forgotten, former Soviet gymnast Olga Korbut performed the ?Korbut Flip? a backward somersault on the balancing beam. She continues to be known by the ?world-famous deadly element and was also known as the ‘Sparrow from Minsk.’ In contrast to how the renowned gymnast’s post was reacted to in her day, Saraiva today received some harsh criticism for her feat.

Gymnastics technique greeted with derision

Many times the mastered artistic skills come off as futile. A prime example of this was Fl?via Lopes Saraiva, whose performance received scathing reviews. Someone in the comments ruled out the injury saying,??That’s called how to blow out your knee.? Another person detailed their worry saying, ?Yes but wouldn’t that eventually be bad for the knee from hypertension and hard impact landing on one leg? Just curious.” Another commenter explained, ?Dangerous because if your leg locks up, you can go unconscious for a few seconds. Not good on a beam!!?
