While several sports always have clear and transparent means of scoring, the same is not true for gymnastics. Despite trying their best to be objective, judges’ biases may creep in. They score gymnasts based on several guidelines and criteria. Yet several people may always have a different opinion.

The internet was stormed by several fans of gymnastics world champion Leanne Wong after her floor exercise evaluation. A social media post has gone viral on the internet carrying several comments from fans bewildered by Wong’s evaluation. Fans alleged that the rising gymnastics star deserved a far better score and was grossly undervalued at the US Championships.

What went wrong with Wong’s scoring?

Leanne Wong is a 19-year-old gymnastics star hailing from Kansas. She has already achieved several feats at both national as well as international levels. Wong was part of the gold medal-winning team at the 2022 Liverpool World Championships. Individually, she was the second-best all-around gymnast at the 2021 Kitakyushu World Championships. Leanne Wong is best known for her floor exercise performances. After all, she secured the bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships in the floor exercise category. Her stunning performances are always a treat to watch for the audience. Her technique and finesse have also earned her a spot in the national team of America every year since 2017. All of this earned the 19-year-old a huge mountain of loyal fans. 

These loyal fans were extremely disappointed when they saw the rising gymnastics sensation get a low score in floor exercise. The list was topped by Queen Simone Biles with a staggering 30.200 points, as reported by NBC Sports. However, Leanne Wong was at number four with 27.350 points. In fact, the low score also affected her overall points. While Biles triumphed with 118.450 points, Wong had to settle for the third position with 111.100 points.

Very few people expected anyone to beat Simone Biles. However, this didn’t mean that fans of the budding gymnastics star wouldn’t get angry over an unsatisfactory judgment. The official Instagram handle of USA Gymnastics uploaded a clip of Wong’s floor exercise performance. This opened a gate for her fans to vent out their emotions over their star’s misjudged performance.

Leanne Wong fans disappointed over poor scoring

Several of Wong’s fans took the scoring of her performance in bad taste. One of the fans complimented the gymnastics star and said, “She deserved more!! STUNNING.” Some of her fans were totally blunt about their disappointment with the judges. One of them commented, “She will score much higher internationally.”

Another critical comment said, “International judges would gobble this up. Don’t F this one up USAG and leave her off the roster like you did Tokyo.” The unfair scoring angered another fan who said, “that floor exercise was worth more than 8.4 dammit!!!!!!” One of Leanne Wong’s fans also pointed out a more detailed criticism of the judges.

“Honestly she deserved way more than the 8.4 execution score she was given, especially given the fact that others with several sizable mistakes and bobbles still had E scores of 8.0 and 8.2. Like Leanne had 2 or 3 stuck cold, chest up landings with beautiful form and artistry throughout the routine,” said the gymnastics enthusiast. 

Fans praised the landings and the beautiful execution displayed by Wong. While the fans are disappointed with the scores, they know that their champion is all girded up to perform her magic on the beam with the upcoming championships in Antwerp, Belgium.
