The star gymnasts have geared up on the mats of Texas to clinch their position in the squad for the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships to be held in Antwerp, Belgium. In the heated competition for the selection event, Simone Biles, an eight-time all-around world champion after emerging victorious at the 2023 U.S. classic, saw a fall on the bars. The athlete’s friend Jordan Chiles also received a saddening blow on the floor exercise of the event. The list does not end here.

Jade Carey, the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Floor Champion, also faced a huge disappointment in her area of expertise. After a huge mishap in her last full-twisting double layout, the athlete’s chances to secure her position in the squad are currently hanging on by a  thread.

A sad turn of events for Jade Carey

The 23-year-old, after her full-twisting double layout, went for another double-double with a big lunge forward. As the athlete’s hands went down on the mat, Carey found herself disappointed with the score on the screen.

Due to stepping out of bounds, the athlete had to settle for a score of 12.300 (5.9, 6.400). A tweet posted by Inside Gymnastics said,

Tough routine for Jade Carey on the floor. It appeared to step out of bounds on her full-twisting double layout. She came in short on the double but kept it on her feet. Hands down on her final tumbling pass.”

Interestingly apart from Carey another gymnast also faced a huge setback on the gymnastics floor. Simone Biles after a staunch comeback at the 2023 U.S. classics faced a fall on the bars.

Fall of Simone Biles on Uneven Bars

As Simone Biles went on to exhibit her skills on the uneven bars, the athlete fell while performing a release move. According to Gymternet, Simone Biles went “off bars on her van Leeuwen. Hit the Weiler half to Maloney to blind full to piked Tkachev to Pak really well and then caught the van Leeuwen the second time.” Lastly, the athlete finished off her uneven bar routine with a score of 12.8.

In essence, from Simone Biles to Jade Carey, this event witnessed many strong athletes face disappointment. While Biles has reached the top of the table at the end of Day 1, Carey’s bid still remains under question. Will Carey be able to secure her spot for the Worlds on the second day?
