According to an interview with Channel News Asia, in Barcelona, three decades ago, Chusovitina began her remarkable Olympic journey, making a lasting impact on the gymnastics community. She made history by winning the team gold medal for the Unified Team, which was formed after the Soviet Union was dissolved. She had previously tasted victory at the World Championships where she won gold medals in the team and floor exercise competitions.

Chusovitina went on to compete for Uzbekistan in a number of Olympic Games, Asian Games, and worldwide championships in the years that followed, showcasing her exceptional talent and unwavering resolve. However, her path took an unexpected turn when her son Alisher was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia, leading her to move to Germany for the best treatment she could give him. She represented the country from 2006 to 2012. She stated emotionally, “This was the most difficult moment in my career because when your child is sick, you know that you can’t help him, only treatment can.”?

Her love for gymnastics however always pushed her to break barriers. Chusovitina views gymnastics as more than just a sport; it is a steadfast passion that gives her great joy. She doesn’t want the title of legend. She believes that on the playing field, where all athletes are equal, age has no bearing. She said, “No matter how old you are, on the competition floor, we are all equal. This is why I am also competing with young and middle-aged athletes.” She continues to be dedicated to gymnastics for the joy it brings her and not for the sake of fame.

Chusovitina talks about the greatest achievement in her career.

Despite her achievement, Chusovitina remains grounded and focused on leaving a lasting legacy for gymnastics. “My greatest achievement is that there is an artistic gymnastics academy named after me that is getting built in Tashkent”, states Chusovitina. Inspiring generations of athletes and women, she seeks to further the sport in Uzbekistan. She says, “I really want gymnastics to grow in Uzbekistan, so that people not only know me, so that our young generation will represent Uzbekistan and make the country?s name ring out all over the world.?

Chusovitina has even secured five elements named after her in the gymnastics rule book. Undeterred by time, she aspires to qualify for the upcoming Olympics in Paris, leaving an indelible mark on the world stage.? Do what you like and make sure to try and do it today, so you don’t have regrets tomorrow.?
