Home/Olympics

Simone Biles had the perfect career until it fell apart like ninepins in 2021. Trying to replicate her sublime performance at the Tokyo Olympics, the US gymnastics icon saw herself failing to judge where her landing spot would be. Shocking the entire world, Biles pulled out of the Olympics, and the word ‘twisties’ became the new word to Google for many. The time immediately after was a tough one for Biles. She had to fight her critics and her mental blocks all at once.

However, Simone Biles is a true champion, and she proved it. Defying all the odds, Biles overcame her demons and came back to win the 2023 World Championships. Since then, there has been only one motto. To push herself to the extreme and conquer her previous nightmare. Even if that means toppling over a hurdle of language. Gregory Milan was more than happy to get into a tête-à-tête/ an exclusive interview for EssentiallySports regarding the same.

Gregory Milan and Simone Biles speak two entirely different languages. Thus, communication is expected to be a major barrier. However, while reflecting on the same, Milan stated that he has a way of dealing with the same. Milan said, “I worked through gestures. I find that, you know, body language is universal. So… Exactly.”

The Frenchman further pointed out that looking deep into one’s eyes and smiling from the heart solves a lot of problems. He also made the revelation that he was unconventional and crazy in his approach. More importantly, being the supporting character Biles is, working with her will definitely feel like less of a challenge. There have been several instances when Biles showcased her supportive self.

Recently, the gymnastics world was torn apart by the racism controversy in Ireland. In a gymnastics competition in Dublin, a young athlete was denied the medal due to the fact that she was of color. This incident reached Simone Biles and soon she responded. Terming the fiasco as “shocking”, Biles lashed out at the Irish gymnastics federation by saying, Now eight million people have seen the video. From Pakistan to Ethiopia they can see this was wrong but Gymnastics Ireland still can’t accept it and say sorry.”

Biles also extended her support to an ex-teammate of Jonathan Owens earlier. While Owens was with the Packers, Biles frequently came to watch her husband play live. During this time, the Olympic gold medalist made a heartwarming gesture for Nico Collins of Houston Texans. Sharing a message for Collins, Biles stated, “Go vote for my bestie girls man. Jonathan played with him in Texas. Love them!” Thus, with Biles’ accommodating nature and Milan’s uniqueness combined, the fans might as well brace themselves for some flairs of excellence come the Paris Olympics.
