Asian performers are gearing up for a show-stopping performance this year as the intense competition unfolds. The continental competition features over 12,000 athletes from all 45 Olympic Council of Asia countries. The 19th Asian Games kicked off on September 23 in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China. Over the course of 15 days, the star-studded arena will host 481 events, concluding with the elite lineup on October 8. This event serves as a crucial stepping stone for athletes eyeing the next Summer Olympics.

The national and continental route to the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships saw a dramatic margin of victory across borders. While the American team, led by Simone Biles, will be there to defend their reigning team title, a recent victory at the Asian Games has raised some major bars.

Asian gymnasts surprised everyone with perfect scores, just when it seemed the world had moved on from Biles’ comeback this year. In the women’s artistic gymnastics event at the 2023 Asian Games, the People’s Republic of China secured the team gold on their home ground on September 25. The Huanglong Sports Centre Gymnasium concluded with a final standing of 161.896, marking a top score of 4.667 points. Japan secured the second spot with 157.229, while the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea clinched the podium finish with 156.829. Notably, this marked Korea’s first international competition since the COVID-19 pandemic, as reported by Olympics.com.

Tokyo Olympian Zhang Jin claimed the top spot with a score of 54.266, comfortably surpassing the 2023 Asian Championships bars bronze medalist Zuo Tong by a wide margin of 1.401. These two gymnasts secured automatic advancement to the Worlds. Zhang Xinyi, the silver medalist in beam, finished third with a score of 52.499 but lost her spot in the all-around competition due to the two-per-country restriction on that day.

Worlds Team appears to be facing a straightforward threat from the Chinese and Japanese women’s teams, who placed fifth and sixth in the 2022 World Gymnastics Championship, respectively.

On the qualifying day, the top three scorers on each apparatus are named as the individual all-around and apparatus finalists for each nation. The final for the all-around features the top eight finishers from each event in Asia, reminiscent of the all-around and select-day World Championship Camp on American soil. Speaking of which, there’s significant anticipation that this year’s team gold will be secured by the winningest gymnast along with her Olympian teammates.

American top qualifiers for World Artistic Gymnastics Championships

Returning to Belgium on October 1 for the Worlds event, Simone Biles is making a comeback to the international stage where she debuted a decade ago. Interestingly, nothing has changed for Biles, who secured an automatic quota in the all-around competition at the U.S. Women’s World Championships Selection Event in Katy, Texas. With a score of 55.700, Biles narrowly edged out 2022 Worlds silver AA Shilese Jones by 0.400. Skye Blakely followed closely with a score of 55.000, while Joscelyn Roberson and Leanne Wong completed the roster.

By securing the top apparatus finishers for the 2023 World Championships, Simone Biles poses a serious threat to every participating country. However, with the narrow finishes and dynamic nature of the tally, the square-off is more exciting than ever.
