Mary Louise Retton is recognized by many from the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles; some even know her from the Wheaties box feature. The 1968-born gymnast was one of the pioneers of gymnastics, relocating to Texas from West Virginia to pursue her sport. During the 80s she became a household name with four medals in the 84′ LA Olympics. She made Olympic history as the first American woman to win the all-around medal, and since then, she has received several commercial sponsorships. The beloved gymnast turned 55 this January 24 and is presently battling a rare pneumonia in a Texas hospital.

According to an earlier video posted by her elder daughter, McKenna Lane Kelley, Retton has been ?fighting for her life? and needed financial support. Although there has been a flood of public donations, the lack of insurance raised difficult questions. Amid the touching declaration and questioning a recent update came from the national committee for the legend.

The saddening update on Mary Lou’s health was first made public by her daughter last week who stated that her mother was “fighting for her life” in the intensive care unit. She also shared Retton’s been in the hospital ICU for a week and ?is not able to breathe on her own.? Kelley asked for money to aid with the hospital fees for her mother in an Instagram post. Fans’ overwhelming response was recently joined by the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) who offered some aid.

According to USOPC spokeswoman Kate Hartman, they are “currently working through the necessary details in real-time.” The committee has contacted Mary Lou’s family, she told USA Today. Hartman said that they “immediately took action to expedite the application process.” And explained that the sports organization ?offers aid to U.S. Olympians and Paralympians facing significant hardships due to illness, death or extenuating circumstances.??

Decades ago at the famous LA Games, Mary Lou scored a perfect 10 on the vault! It was an unexpected win since she was “five-hundredths of a point behind Romania?s Ecaterina Szabo,” reported NY Times. A benchmark even modern gymnasts find difficult to achieve. She gained fresh renown and was able to get endorsement deals with companies like McDonald’s, Dobie Originals, and more. This year, celebrity net worth valued her at $2 million, which led to serious concerns about her recent use of crowdfunding with hundreds of dollars now.

What are people saying about the Mary Lou Retton fund?

After the public admission of Retton’s health her daughter, gymnast McKenna Kelley, started a GoFundMe drive on Tuesday. On the Spotfund (crowdfunding) website “MaryLouRettonsFight,” McKenna set the $50,000 target which was shortly reached as donations started flooding in. The campaign had amassed more than $409,000 by Friday night.

After the overwhelming donations including text messages for Retton and her family, a gratitude-filled update was also posted by McKenna. Although there have been mixed reactions on the internet there has been no clarification from the distressed family. Some fans believe Mary Lou’s two million doesn’t necessarily imply she has liquid assets to cover a sizable medical expense. As for now, everyone’s praying for Retton’s quick recovery as she struggles for her life in the ICU.
