When Simone Biles withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics, all eyes were on 19-year-old Suni Lee. Subsequently, she lived up to the expectations and brought home a gold medal in the all-around event. However, moving ahead with her gymnastics journey, Lee has been nominated alongside legends like Steph Curry, Aaron Rodgers, and Allyson Felix for a prestigious honor.

After returning from the Tokyo Olympics, Suni Lee struggled with mental health issues. However, along with fighting her internal challenges, she did wonders for Auburn. After many years, the Olympic champion led her team to the NCAA Championships this season. Furthermore, competing for the Tigers, she also won the beam title.

Suni Lee nominated for the 2022 ESPY Awards

Joining the league of legends like Tom Brady, Steph Curry, and Allyson Felix, the 19-year-old Lee has been nominated for the 2022 ESPY Awards. Her category for the awards is the ‘Best Athlete in Women’s Sports’ and ‘Best Olympian in Women’s Sports.’ She posted a nomination poster on her Instagram story and wrote“watched the ESPYS every year growing up, this is so unreal. Blessed is not even the word.”

Although her nomination may have come as a surprise to her, she deserves every ounce of the honor. For the past year, Lee has been the heart of US gymnastics. However, primarily, Auburn is extremely lucky to have her as a student and team member.

Lee was suffering from imposter syndrome

A couple of months after the Tokyo Olympics were very challenging for Lee. In an interview, she revealed“There’s just been so much doubt like, ‘Oh, she shouldn’t have won the Olympics, blah, blah, blah,’ and it really hits my soul.” There was immense pressure to perform every time she was at an event, and she couldn’t handle it. However, with the help of people around her and her teammates, she could finally gain some confidence.

Now that Lee is in the big leagues, perhaps she’ll have to handle such pressure almost every moment of her journey. Though after the incredible NCAA season, she seems to be stronger than ever and is ready to take on any challenge that comes her way.
