Simone Biles is back. But her husband is unable to attend her events. Both their professional commitments have kept them apart. Right after their wedding, Owens took up a seasonal contract with the Green Bay Packers. Owing to his NFL commitments, he has missed some of Biles’ historic moments this year.
Biles’ comeback at the 2023 US Gymnastics Championships was as big as ever. She finished first in all three event days, becoming the only gymnast to earn an eighth all-around title. Yet her husband wasn’t by her side. After all, he would have to pay a big price to be there for her.

Being present for Biles in person puts Jonathan Owens in a tough spot who finished his fourth-weekend match with the Packers. This time it’s no different, with Biles in Antwerp leading the American Gymnastics team. The Owens are often seen expressing their love on social media platforms. Just before the gymnast moved to foreign soil, she engaged in a Q&A with her 6.9M Instagram followers. One follower asked her, “Is Jonathan able to come to your meets?” Biles replied with a simple “No.”
The 19 Worlds victor went on to explain, “If he misses training, he’ll either be cut or fined.” Further, she said, “NFL fines the boys for everything.”
According to the Spanish website ‘as’, undrafted players on rookie contracts risk a whopping $40,000 penalty per day like Jonathan. Now that’s just for newbies, players on the fifth-year option can expect around $50,000 in penalties.
If a player decides to cause on-field delays, it leads to a significant loss, since resources and players are charged for each unexcused absence at compulsory minicamps or training camps. Players could get penalized $16,459 for the first day of a minicamp, $32,920 for the second day, and $49,374 for the third day under current agreement. It could go up to $50,000 each day during training camps and about $2M for veterans missing the whole champ. However, despite the distance, Owens penned a special message for Biles ahead of the event.
Simone Biles receives a hearty cheer from husband: “Can’t wait to watch you”
Making a comeback to the Belgium Worlds stage after a decade, the gymnast shared a thread of pictures captioned, “Touch down in Belgium.” Joining her fans’ congratulatory line, husband Owens dropped a comment, “I can’t wait to watch you back out there.” He proudly wrote no one is better than his wife and also referred to her as the “GOAT.”
