Would you skip family time for a Beyoncé performance, or is Chiles taking it too far?

Jordan Chiles is a Beyoncé superfan. The two-time Olympian admires the pop star so much that she has even combined this passion with her other love—gymnastics. One of the standout elements of Chiles’s 2024 U.S. Championships performances was her leotards, inspired by Beyoncé’s 2023 Renaissance World Tour. The 23-year-old has expressed her admiration for the artist on numerous occasions.

During the Gold Over America tour, Entertainment Tonight caught up with Chiles and her BFF Simone Biles. During the interview, the host asked if the two-time Olympic medalist would choose the greatest spring event on earth over starring in a Beyoncé music video. Despite gymnastics being her passion, the champion gymnast chose the music video. “I’ve done the Olympics twice; give me that Beyoncé video,” confessed the Texas-based gymnast.

So it’s no surprise the Olympic gold medalist beamed with excitement when the NFL and Netflix dropped a video promo featuring Queen Bey. “Sorry to all my family I will be here!!!!!!!” Jordan Chiles wrote while sharing her video on her Instagram story. The 25-second promo showed the Grammy award-winning singer standing atop a car covered in red roses.

Then comes the big announcement. “Christmas Day, Houston TX. Half-time show,” flashed on the screen, confirming Queen B’s performance. Netflix was part of the promo as the final screen of the video Chiles shared on her Instagram story revealed the streaming giant would stream the performance live across the globe. “LIVE ON NETFLIX WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 25 4:30 PM ET,” read the announcement.

The promo compelled Jordan Chiles to even ditch her family on one of the biggest holidays of the year. While it was no doubt a tough choice, Chiles chose to watch her icon instead of spending time with her family. However, Chiles choosing Beyoncé shouldn’t be a surprise. Chiles found a way to pay homage to the pop star even through her gymnastics routine.

Appearing on Vogue’s The Run-Through podcast, Chiles expressed how she crafted her 2023 Renaissance World Tour-inspired leotards for the 2024 U.S. Championship. “I literally went on her social media, went through her whole entire Instagram account to find these outfits,” confessed the Olympian on August 1. So, Chiles is not making any changes when it comes to attending the special event during the Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans game.

Jordan Chiles’ decision to attend the live event may be the right one

The Olympian could have easily watched the show on Netflix from the comfort of her home with her family. While that sounds convenient, Netflix’s foray into live sports streaming did not inspire confidence. The streaming platform secured exclusive rights to broadcast the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson event on Friday night at AT&T Stadium.

“60 million households around the world tuned in live to watch Paul vs. Tyson! Nearly 50 million households globally tuned in live for the co-main event of Taylor vs. Serrano 2,” Netflix proudly announced on Instagram. However, there was one issue. Among the millions who tuned in, the vast majority had to tackle terrible coverage. And that’s something Jordan Chiles can’t risk.

The Netflix app struggled with buffering, resulting in a blurry live stream that stuttered continuously. Angry fans and even athletes such as Simone Biles’ husband Jonathan Owens voiced their disapproval, and even the streaming giant admitted their blunder. “Even had our buffering systems on the ropes,” confessed Netflix’s official Instagram handle.

Beyoncé’s immense popularity, combined with Ravens and Texans fans tuning in, could turn Queen Bey’s performance into yet another mega event. However, after the disastrous coverage of the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight, no one would blame Jordan Chiles for having reservations about trusting the streaming giant.
