Social media has the power to make almost anything go viral, including diamond testers. While otherwise looking like lackluster handheld gadgets, the diamond testers went viral after people found they determined the authenticity of gemstones by just touching them with the tester. So Simone Biles’ Gold Over America squadmate Ian Gunther couldn’t pass up the opportunity to test the gymnastics icon and her husband’s extensive diamond accessory collection.
With the 2024 Gold Over America Tour behind them, the gymnasts are posting some memorable moments from the tour. So Gunther posted a video of himself testing the over $370,000 worth of diamond accessories that Simone Biles and her husband sported. First on the list was Biles’ $64,857 (estimated) GOAT necklace, followed by her diamond earring.
Then came Jonathan Owens, who Gunther described as “iced out” because of the multiple diamond accessories Owens wore, including his diamond-encrusted teeth. “It it real?” asked Gunther, to which Owens responded, “We’re gonna find out.” Thankfully, Simone Biles and her husband’s prized diamond jewelry passed the test with flying colors.

While the video was just for fun, failing a test wouldn’t have been fun for either the gymnastics icon or the NFL star. While little information about the couple’s combined diamond jewelry, we do know about the eye-watering cost of Bile’s iconic GOAT necklace and engagement ring. 546 diamonds adorn the goat-shaped necklace and F. Hinds UK’s Jeremy Hinds estimated the cost to be around 50,000 pounds or nearly $65,000.

Meanwhile, the engagement ring that Jonathan Owens gave Biles, designed by Houston-based jeweler ZoFrost, was estimated to have burned a $300,000 hole in the NFL star’s pocket. However, that didn’t seem to have affected the Chicago Bears’ safety at all, as he sported diamond bracelets, chains, earrings, a ring, and a watch. However, Gunther didn’t just test the bling on Mr. and Mrs. Owens.
Ian Gunther tested Yul Moldauer’s diamond necklace and Joscelyn Roberson’s and Christine Peng-Peng Lee’s earrings. While Moldauer and Roberson passed, the tester couldn’t give a conclusive answer if Lee’s earring sported authentic diamonds. And this is where we discover a potential catch with the product.

Like almost every product that goes viral on TikTok, the handheld diamond tester has its quirks. According to Presidium instruments, these gadgets have a pen-shaped probe on the tip with sensors. Touching a gemstone with the probe measures the material’s thermal or electrical conductivity. If the reading matches with those of genuine diamonds, the tests emit a beep.
However, shortly after the testers went viral, TikTokers, who had experience working in the industry, came forward with some advice. “I’m not saying that it won’t work, it just will not give you the most accurate results… There’s also a certain way you have to hold the diamond tester,” explained a TikTok user who claimed to have worked in a jewelry shop as per Yahoo News.

There was little doubt that Simone Biles’s one-of-a-kind GOAT necklace was authentic, even without the testing. Experts such as Jeremy Hinds have already estimated the cost. The jeweler who created the icon piece also told ABC7 they won’t make any replicas of the GOAT necklace, despite “overwhelming” demand.
So this raises the question if Peng-Peng’s earrings are also genuine and whether Ian Gunther simply didn’t hold the probe at the correct angle. However, no matter the outcome, it seemed that everyone enjoyed the little activity. In fact, it was Simone Biles who tested most of her husband’s diamond accessories.
