With unexpected twists, perfect 10s, and stunning debuts from the top teams, week four of the 2024 NCAA Gymnastics season has been spectacular. The latest surprise? No. 24 Clemson defeated North Carolina with a score of 196.550 instead of 194.250 for the Tar Heels. UNC is still making a good showing despite a season marred by injuries to top gymnasts.

Still, the team’s excitement is clear as they celebrate a significant milestone. In college gymnastics, when mental toughness and accuracy are crucial, how can North Carolina turn the round and return better than before?

Head coach of UNC Gymnastics Danna Durante acknowledged the difficulties her team encounters when injuries force lineup changes. She thought the gymnasts selected to participate against Clemson were well-prepared, despite the absence of major players. Durante told The Daily Tar Heel, “Mentality is a huge part of it, right?” adding, “Physically, they’re well prepared. They’re strong. I think we need to be able to make, be very comfortable with adjustments in the lineup.”

Unfortunately, injuries affected their performance, resulting in a new low on bars(47.675) and a tie for the season’s lowest on vault. As a result of injuries, UNC had to change its usual six-gymnast lineup to a five-member squad for the competition. However, junior Isabelle Schaefer won the bars title—a competition that Clemson usually dominates—after putting on an incredible routine and scoring a 9.925.

Schulze, who hadn’t done a floor routine all season impressed with a score of 9.825. While Gwen Fink, a sophomore, and junior Taylor Schulze both helped the team overcome challenges. Meanwhile, Fink, who had made mistakes in her prior performances, replied with a career-high score of 9.875 on her floor routine. This triple gymnast saves showed a possible attitude change that may serve as the impetus for victory in their next competitions. In addition, UNC’s performance is bolstered by individual achievements.
