The Paris Olympics’ floor exercise finals saw an all-black podium, with Rebecca Andrade, Simone Biles, and Jordan Chiles in first, second, and third, respectively. The iconic moment came when the two American gymnasts, Jordan Chiles and Simone Biles, bowed down to the Brazilian, demonstrating a show of respect and sportsmanship among the gymnasts.

However, for Chiles, the celebrations of a career-first individual Olympic medal didn’t last long. Why so? Following the CAS’s review, coach Cecile Landi exceeded the time limit for an appeal, resulting in the FIG having to reinstate the American gymnast’s score. Her drop to fifth place resulted in the rise of her two Romanian rivals in the standings. Indeed, the controversy was significant, and Chiles fought diligently for her medal. However, one of those Romanian gymnasts has now achieved a significant accolade off the mat in the US, leaving the American gymnast’s fans baffled on social media.

A big move for the Romanian gymnast

So who took third place in the floor exercise finals after Jordan Chiles was penalized with fifth place? It was Ana Barbosu. Yes, with the decision of the CAS and FIG, she was able to grab her career-first Olympic bronze medal, that too, in her first Olympic Games for her gymnastics career. It’s undoubtedly a significant achievement, but it didn’t come about as she had anticipated.

However, it has been months since the incident, and many have moved forward in their lives. But where is Barbosu going? Taking to her Instagram, the Romanian gymnast announced that she will be joining Stanford University. A shocking move? Absolutely! “It feels almost surreal to announce that I’ve been accepted to Stanford University!” wrote Barbosu in the caption of the social media post.

Such experiences are unique in one’s life, and the Romanian gymnast is enthusiastic about embarking on her new journey. Indeed, the Stanford Cardinal is one of the top teams in the NCAA’s first division. They compete with the best in the league, and they know that with the addition of a gymnast like Barbosu, they might have a chance for the title with their all-star lineup.

Jordan Chiles’ fans had a different perspective

Indeed, for many, this announcement was just unexpected. The rival of Jordan Chiles on American soil? Quite a bold decision from Stanford University and the Romanian gymnast herself. However, some weren’t that happy with this announcement, as one comment read, “SHUT THE FRONT DOOR.” A curious fan stated, “Last thing I ever expected! I’m still not sure if it’s a joke? 😂 if not though when is she starting.” Similarly surprised, another fan stated, “I just saw the post and I had to read it like 4 times because I thought my eyes were playing games!!!!”

The medal controversy was surely a big one. But what opinion did Ana Barbosu have on it? During an interview, the Romanian gymnast confessed, stating, “I can’t help but think about Sabrina and Jordan right now. It’s a difficult situation for us, with so many uncertainties and overwhelming emotions. We have not done anything wrong at the Olympics. And that the Olympic spirit is more important than any misunderstanding between the authorities the day will come when all three of us will receive a bronze medal.”

However, coming back to Stanford recruitment, many fans were still in disbelief, as one stated, “What? I’m laughing at how unexpected this is 😭😭” Similarly, another fan reacted, stating, “Stanford recruiting going craaazy recently.”

There will be many opportunities that will be present on the NCAA stage for Barbosu. Her American adventure will lead her to many more heights in the sport, and gymnastics fans couldn’t be more excited to see her on the mat as soon as they can.
