Owens reveals how Biles keeps him grounded amidst NFL pressure

On November 27th, Jonathan Owens, sporting a white beanie with “Chicago” written on it and a black hoodie, joined an interview with Fox 32 Chicago. During the conversation, the host asked, “How do you guys like continuously push each other to be the greatest?” Owens, the Chicago Bears safety, has been performing well this NFL season, even though the Bears started off rough, giving up a 16-0 lead to the Lions in the first half. They managed to close the gap to 23-20 but ultimately lost after botching their final play. Despite the tough loss, Owens had his biggest supporter in the stands—his wife, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, cheering him on during the Thanksgiving Day game.

In the interview, Owens shared, “Everyone else is going to drink the Kool-Aid and tell you how good you are, but it’s always about having someone who can bring you down to earth a little bit.” He went on to explain how Biles, though not an expert in football, gives him valuable feedback. “She might tell me, ‘Ah, babe, I think you can make that,'” Owens said. “She doesn’t know too much about football, but she knows enough to spot when I’m slipping, and I respect that.”

Having the daily company of an elite athlete like Biles inspires Owens to the extreme.  “She’s the greatest in her sport ever. So, I’m like, some of that has to rub off on me, you know what I mean? So, um, I just love having her there, and like, it just gives me more energy, more effort,“ he added, stating that she inspires him to work harder knowing that she is also good at what she does. “I want to impress my wife,” he added.

Despite the distance and the demanding previous schedules, Owens and Biles have struggled to balance life as newlyweds. But now that Simone has more leisure time after the Olympics, they even officially get to enjoy their married life in Chicago. Owens expressed his happiness, saying, “This is really our first time being able to just be married. I come home, and there’s food cooking, and it smells good… It’s just been great just to be able to be married.” The couple now relishes spending time together, exploring new restaurants, and enjoying the powerful partnership they’ve built both on and off the field. Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens have always dreamed of beginning their new lives together, and after Simone won four more Olympic medals during the Paris 2024 Games, she took the time to look ahead. A few months ago, Simone said that she and Jonathan had discussed having children. “I definitely see myself as a mom one day,“ she said, but they both also recognized that there are still some things they want to achieve in life before they become parents.  “Jonathan would have had kids yesterday if he could,”  Simone said laughing; however, it is clear that while they both are ready for the next step, they are not rushing in order to make sure that they are ready.

But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows for the couple. Simone has faced criticism that has been directed at Jonathan. It all started when Owens, who plays for the Chicago Bears, joyfully wore Simone’s gold medal from the U.S. team’s victory at the Olympics. As expected, the backlash was almost instant, and Simone had finally had enough. “The crazy thing is that I put my medal on every single member of my family and took pictures. So don’t ever make assumptions,” she replied a little angrily, all done with her futile attempt at improving him.

“Like y’all are so f**king miserable. Leave us alone.” Biles admitted that at first she found the hate laughable, but eventually, it took a toll. “One night I just broke down and said, ‘Why are they talking about my husband like that?’ They don’t know him. They don’t know who he is, and if anyone has met him, they know he’s the sweetest guy; he’d do anything for anybody.”

However, amidst all such fuss, the pair’s chemistry is quite intact and powerful. Jonathan supported Simone during the Paris Olympics, and he was there to encourage her. Simone said that Jonathan cherished the pin exchange that took place. “He was more excited about the pin exchange. He loved the pin exchange.” Across the victories, the exhilarating thrills, fame, and more, they are simply about standing for each other and being strong together, no matter what the world does or says to them.
