It was supposed to be a fairytale story for the Georgia Gymdogs. Despite being 10x NCAA Gymnastics champions, Georgia’s performance in the national tournament hasn’t been the best in the last fifteen years. But that was all supposed to change. Last year, it was revealed that the iconic gymnastics coach of Simone Biles and WCC’s stars, Cecile Landi, would take charge of the program after her Paris Olympics responsibilities ended. But the fans aren’t happy with what they’re seeing.
At tonight’s Denver Quad Meet, the Gymdogs performed poorly, to say the least. Finishing third in the prestigious four-team event, Landi’s girls are currently sitting on a 1-2 overall record after the opening meet of the season. Despite having significant distance from the fourth-place finishers Long Island, Georgia was defeated convincingly by Denver and Missouri. Understandably, fans are concerned.
On January 12, the official Georgia Gymdogs account took to X to share details of how its season opener went at the Magness Arena in Denver, Colorado. “The GymDogs finish up their season opener with a 195.975 at the Denver Quad Meet,” reads the social media update and is accompanied by the scores from each of the four scores.

With some observation, it can be noticed that Landi’s team performed poorly on the beam as compared to both Denver and Missouri. With 48.325, the Georgia Gymdogs were left in the dust by the two other teams. While Lily Smith anchored the rotation with an emphatic 9.900, her teammates hadn’t done so well to begin with.

On previous occasions, Georgia’s form on the beam has been under question several times. And seeing how the first NCAA display on the apparatus went under even Landi, one fan grumbled, “Also I see Georgia has still yet to fix anything about beam 💀.“ The emoji that accompanies the comment almost helps to hear the tone of frustration of the fan. More seemed to think the same.
Fans take a jibe at the Georgia Gymdogs
“Is there any improvement from seasons past?” sounded the curious inquiry of another fan. Considering the incredibly prolific coach that Cecile Landi is, one would think her designation as the head coach would immediately show its effects on the Georgia Gymdogs’ performance. And yet, apart from Smith, none of the Georgia athletes could make much of a ripple on the beam, and the fan’s complaint is justifiable.

However, on the other hand, the score on the vault was assuring. With 49.300 points, Georgia claimed the top spot in the event. Landi’s girls bagged a similar result on the bars as well (49.350). Seeing that, one fan can’t help but be optimistic that better days are certainly ahead. “Enjoyed watching – seemed like stronger skills on vault & bars from last year,” commented the fan after wishing the gang good luck in 2025.

However, the shambling third-place finish is making many remember how the 2022 season was a disaster class for Georgia. “They’re just giving a tribute to their 2022 team,” joked one fan, as they pondered whether the heartbreaking 4-10 overall record from three years would be replicated this season once again. “Georgia beam situation why am i not surprised,” sneered another Georgia Gymdogs loyalist.
