Gruesome Reality Forces 20-Year-Old Gymnast To Come Out Following Seven Fellow Victims

The truth has finally come to light, and gymnastics can’t turn a blind eye any longer. It’s like another #MeToo movement unfolding in the very world where gymnasts are idolized – gymnastics itself! Heartbreaking, yes, but it’s the wake-up call the sport desperately needed. What started with one brave 24-year-old gymnast daring to lift the curtain on the sport’s hidden truths has snowballed into a powerful wave of voices. Six other gymnasts, once left to fend for themselves, have now stepped up to back her up. And just when you think the storm’s calmed, another gymnast joins the ranks, making it clear that they’re done with being silenced. So, how this all started? Tabea Alt, 24, recently shared some shocking revelations on Instagram, exposing the darker side of the sport. She wrote, “My health was deliberately put at risk by ignoring medical prescriptions and making me do gymnastics with several fractures and sending me to competitions with broken bones.” But it doesn’t stop there. Alt went on to say, “This is not an isolated case: eating disorders, criminal training, painkillers, threats, and humiliation were the order of the day. Today I know that it was systematic physical and mental abuse.” These aren’t just allegations, this is a wake-up call that’s long overdue. Alt’s decision to speak out is not without its context. She ended her gymnastics career in 2021, at just 21 years old, a decision that came after years of this abuse. She shared that, despite the pressure to stay silent, she had reached out privately to officials three years ago, writing a letter to DTB president Alfons Holzl and others, urging them to address the issue and initiate change. Sadly, her efforts were ignored. “The idea of addressing these issues internally seemed safer to me,” Alt explained. “But it led to nothing. It was ignored or simply not taken seriously.” Not only Alt, but more former athletes are speaking out against the German Turner Association, accusing them of ignoring their suffering. Research shows that some of these issues have been known by the association for a long time. And now, another gymnast, Lara-Marie Hinsberger, has come forward to share her own painful experience. On December 31st, the 20-year-old gymnast posted on Instagram, saying, “I have debated for a long time whether to post this. In the end, however, this time damaged me so much that it would be irresponsible to continue being silent. Thanks to all the girls before me who gave me the courage to find my voice and tell my story!” In her emotional post, gymnast Lara-Marie opened up about her journey, starting at just five years old when she joined gymnastics simply because her best friend was doing it. It wasn’t long before her natural talent showed, and she quickly outpaced the other kids. This led to her joining a special gymnastics school, and years later, she made her dream a reality by becoming part of the youth national team. But, as she points out, even though she achieved everything she’d hoped for, it never brought her happiness. “Being part of the national team meant monthly training courses in Frankfurt. These courses were hell on earth for me at the time. I cried before, during, and after them because I always had the feeling that I wasn’t enough,” Lara-Marie shared. At 14, Lara-Marie moved to Stuttgart to train at a higher level. What was initially an exciting new chapter quickly became a nightmare. She was placed in a boarding school far from home, where her life revolved solely around training and school. She had little freedom, and even when she finished school early, her coaches manipulated her into returning to the gym. She remembers, “I thought that the coaches were really happy when I was there. Today I know that it was all pure manipulation.” Despite her emotional struggles and severe weight loss, her coaches ignored the signs. The focus was always on performance, not her well-being. One of the most heart-wrenching parts of her story is when she talks about her physical and mental breakdown. After being diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa and depression at just 14, Lara-Marie was forced to keep it a secret to protect the gym’s image. “Everyone in German gymnastics was talking about it, but unfortunately no one intervened to protect me,” she wrote. She continued to train through injuries and mental health struggles, all while the pressure to perform kept building. At one point, she was competing at the German Championships at just 37kg—her body breaking down but the only concern was her results. Lara-Marie’s story isn’t just her own, it’s a shared experience with many others, as six more gymnasts have spoken out about similar mistreatment. As she puts it, “In Stuttgart, I was treated like an object. I was used until I was so physically and mentally broken that I lost all value to the trainers …My experience was in Stuttgart, but it is important that the entire system changes.” The culture of prioritizing performance over athlete well-being is damaging, and it’s time for that to change. As Lara-Marie now reflects, “The only thing I can do now is to tell my story so that after all these years I can finally have closure and spare future gymnasts from experiences like mine.” But Alt isn’t alone. GERMANY’S GYMNASTICS FEDERATION FACES MAJOR BACKLASH AFTER ABUSE ALLEGATIONS REVEALED BY GYMNAST Michelle Timm, another former gymnast, has also opened up about her experience, and it’s a tough one. She described the “catastrophic conditions” at Germany’s Stuttgart training center, calling out the system that failed her and so many others. She even contacted the German Gymnastics Federation (DTB) two months ago, trying to highlight these issues. Her message is chilling: “Years of abuse are destroying people, I can’t even express what the kids are going through.” It’s clear that this has been a long-standing problem, and Timm’s words make it even harder to ignore. Around the same time, rising star Meolie Jauch made the difficult decision to retire at just 17, just 11 days after Timm’s allegations came to light. Jauch had been battling through a serious ACL injury and had hoped to return to the sport, not for herself, but for all the people who believed in her. But after much reflection, she chose to walk away. “I listen to my inner voice and quit top-class sport. Not because I don’t want to fight anymore, not because my body can’t do it anymore but because I can’t do it mentally anymore. The hall, which was my home for so long, is now a place where I no longer feel so comfortable. After ten years of competitive sports full of good events but also some tearful and painful ones I am now starting a new, completely different phase.” Olympic gymnast Elisabeth Seitz has recently joined the discussion, as more people express their opinions on the matter. In her last IG post on December 31, she mentioned that all the accusations and allegations being spread were not new to them, including her. Seitz was a great support to the other athletes and stated that something needed to be done in the sport. Ironically, having suffered through years of abuse she used to believe that mistreatment is a norm in gymnastics and now she is demanding justice for it. “This is not normal.” For Seitz, the goal now is to focus on what the athletes perform which means that the athletes should be able to flourish in their sport of choice and not merely endure it. She said, “Success is only really one if it’s achieved the right way,” therefore, indicating that we need to do better by our athletes. The German Gymnastics Federation (DTB) has now further assured that it will look into the allegations in more depth, especially those concerning coaches and systems. This is the time for the sport to self-reflect since numerous athletes who earlier were forced to endure their abuse in silence are now fighting for justice.
