Why do we fall, Bruce?” the future Batman was asked by his butler after he was left shaken by a tumble. Alfred Pennyworth’s iconic statement about how bouncing back is what defines a person is surely a life lesson. And that’s exactly what an NCAA gymnast is looking to do. After the Olympic dream came crashing down, the Florida Gators star made her triumphant comeback, and it’s one for the storybooks.

Ahead of the Olympic Team Trials last year, Skye Blakely‘s Achilles tendon injury threw her out of the race to Paris. Naturally, the teenager was heartbroken. However, that wasn’t the end of the road, and the 2022 World Championships gold medalist is finally back in her natural habitat. Justifiably, Blakely is feeling the emotions take her over.

In her post on Instagram from January 14, the 19-year-old shared her elation after helping the Florida Gators trounce four opponents at the Hype Night last Friday. While she didn’t post any of the highest scores of the meet, Skye Blakely’s debut as a Gator was nonetheless a monumental occasion. “199 days after rupturing my achilles, I was able to make my NCAA debut as a gator! so extremely blessed and grateful for God to allow me to experience this moment,” she wrote on her social media update.

On the first training day of the US Team Trials, Blakely suffered a horrific injury, which ended her hope of representing the Stars and Stripes on the grand stage. However, coming back, she looks determined to compensate for the missed opportunity in any way possible. “I’m still on the road to full recovery and only up from here,” read her iron resolve. However, Skye also mentioned how the journey back has been intense and required her to go the extra mile. “This recovery has had many tears, a lot of hard work, patience, and growing,” she said.

Thankfully, she also had many people around her to hold onto her hand during the rough patch. “My parents, teammates, coaches, medical staff, and all of the gator staff have helped me get to this moment,” the Florida gymnast sounded grateful for all those who stood in her corner.

While 2x NCAA medalist Sloane Blakely’s younger sister didn’t perform incredibly at the quad meet, her mere presence was enough to excite the fans. Skye posted an assuring 9.725 on the bars, proving that she wasn’t sitting idle all this time after the injury. With her among their ranks, Florida hauled 196.675 points (Michigan 195.650, Nebraska 195.600, and Northern Illinois 191.950), starting off its NCAA season with a bang at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center’s Exactech Arena. Naturally, being there to experience it was an awesome feeling for Blakely, and she has been preparing for it.

Returning just one day shy of her Achilles tendon injury, Skye Blakely felt like this was a great start to getting back up there, and this was visible in her post-meet conversation as reported by ‘floridagators.com’. “It was a couple of weeks after surgery, I knew I wanted to be back by the first meet of the season…But I think when I really knew in my head was last Friday [with first landing on hard surface],” she said Friday about what the coming days could look like, “I’ve been working really hard and it’s been coming together nicely. [When I hit that landing], I knew I was ready to be out there.” But her comeback was always a question of “when“, and not “if“.

Soon after her injury last year, Skye felt the pull of the uneven bars and knew she had to get back to action. In November last year, she took to social media to show her practice session on the bar, making it clear that she wouldn’t let the setback keep her down for too long. Just days later, she teased fans with a “new skill” speculation, and her followers couldn’t wait to see what Blakely has been brewing behind closed doors. While the fans weren’t all elated seeing her trying to spread her wings so soon after the injury, Skye was determined, and her NCAA debut boosted her confidence. “So happy and excited to be a part of the Florida team. Another step forward!” she wrote on X right after the Gators’ win on January 10.

Blakely’s presence adds more depth to the Florida Gators’ roster, especially with the incredible athletes who will be the Texas native’s teammates this season. 2024 NCAA uneven bars gold medalist Leanne Wong will be adding the charge for the Gators, and she was on a roll at Florida’s season opener. Posting a score of 39.725, the 2x World Championships gold medalist Gators star topped the All-Around list and also bagged the individual titles on the bar, beam, and floor exercise.

Skye’s sister didn’t fare too badly herself and followed Wong in second place on the AA with a score of 39.500. Moreover, senior Gator girl Riley McCusker also made her return in the blue uniform after a preseason ankle injury that required surgery. She scored 9.100 on the bar and 9.775 on the beam on Friday.
