Can Carlos Yulo's Olympic triumphs overshadow the family drama threatening his hard-earned success?

The Philippines’ “golden boy,” Carlos Yulo, has taken the Olympic stage by storm, snagging not just one but two gold medals—making history as the first Filipino to do so! Naturally, the spotlight is now shining brightly on this 24-year-old gymnast, and he’s set to bask in all the honors and accolades coming his way. In a generous move, former House of Representatives member Chavit Singson stepped in to offer Carlos and his family a hefty PhP 5 million (about $86,000) through a Facebook video back in late August.

This came after some family disputes became the talk of the town post-Olympics, and Singson hoped this gesture would help “foster unity within the family.” Proudly sharing the nation’s admiration, Singson acknowledged Yulo’s historic achievement, highlighting that success is a shared journey, supported by those who care. However, just as the spotlight on Carlos was at its peak, family drama began to surface. In a surprising twist, Singson then revealed news that could potentially overshadow Carlos’s hard-earned prize money.

In a recent scoop from VN Express, businessman and former politician Chavit Singson has generously announced his intention to gift 1 million pesos (around US$17,150) to the parents and siblings of the talented gymnast Carlos Yulo, spreading some holiday cheer to the Yulo family.

According to PhilStar, this heartfelt announcement came during a press briefing at a hotel in Bacolod City, where Singson reiterated his standing offer of 5 million pesos to Carlos. However, there’s a condition: the funds are contingent upon the gymnast reconciling with his mother, Angelica Poquiz Yulo.

With a hopeful heart, Singson expressed his desire for Carlos to emerge as a family role model, encouraging forgiveness for past misunderstandings and paving the way for healing within the family. It seems like Singson’s gesture isn’t just about the money; it’s about mending bonds and celebrating unity as they approach the holiday season.

This was followed by a dramatic turn in Carlos Yulo’s family saga in August when he accused his mother, Angelica, of withdrawing money from his account without permission and questioned her role in managing his finances, including his gymnastics allowance. In a TikTok video, he shared bank statements to support his claims and called out Angelica for allegedly misleading him about a 70,000 pesos ($1,221) incentive, clarifying that it was from 2022 rather than the 2021 World Championships as she had claimed.

Despite the tension, Carlos expressed hope for healing and stated, “I have forgiven you a long time ago.” Angelica admitted to the withdrawals but explained she was trying to protect him financially. Tearfully, she asked to mend their relationship, acknowledging, “There is no perfect family.” As Carlos continues to shine and enjoy his accolades, there’s even more prize money on the way to this gifted gymnast!
