Former American gymnast Shannon Miller is one of the most successful American gymnasts in US history. She has won more significant awards than any other gymnast after Simone Biles. However, she remains the only female athlete to be inducted into the US Olympic Hall of Fame twice. Miller has battled cancer twice and is now a strong proponent of preventative medicine.

Shannon Miller shares valuable lessons as a sports parent

In an interview with USA Today, Miller engaged in a round of Q&A where she answered questions about her career, cancer-free life, and being a sports parent in detail. The interviewer took particular interest in her role as a mother proposing the question, “Are your kids into sports? What do they play?.” The mother of two replied, ” They are. A bit of everything. Our philosophy has been, Be physically active because we know how important that is. So, choose a sport, any sport.”

Miller and her businessman husband John Falconetti have two children: Sterling Diane, aged 10, and John Rocco, who is 13. Despite limiting their social presence to special occasions on her social accounts, she was open and honest about them in the interview. Miller emphasized the need of picking a sport that “doesn?t even have to be a competitive sport” but would keep the kids physically active.

The seven-time Olympic medalist concluded that pursuing athletic activities can help kids develop crucial qualities like discipline, determination, and focus, which will benefit them in every aspect of their lives. She does, however, think that parents should allow their children to choose their path and not pressure them into a sport they don’t like. Miller became familiar with the athletic stress when she was a young athlete and strained to maintain a balance.

The long journey of young Miller who later battled cancer

Miller’s valuable life lessons come from her acquaintance as a young athlete. She began her gymnastics career when she was just six years old and started competing in gymnastics at a young age. Miller’s parents brought her to Jerry Clavier’s gym in Edmond, Oklahoma which was five minutes from her house. The presence of her parents in her life and their constant support made caused her to fall in love with the activity. Miller learned valuable life lessons through her gymnastics career, despite winning Olympic medals, she promotes honing the choice of activity that interests her kids.
