Simone Biles, the legendary Olympic gymnast, and mental health advocate, recently shared an insight with her fans that helped her tackle those blues. During the 2020 Olympics, Biles dropped out of the game because of her mental health. Yet, when swamped by media for her decision, she seemed to have zero regrets. According to her, it was a price to pay, but a small one.
Her openness to talk about mental health and the struggles faced by sportspeople brought her laurels. The ace gymnast opened up about a technique she said helped her stay afloat.

Simone Biles devoted a ‘worry hour’
In a previous interview, Biles had shared how she attended her therapy sessions ‘religiously,’ adding, “And it’s just something that took hold of me (where) your body and mind tell you when enough is enough.” In an interview with People, the 24-year-old athlete spoke up about all the mental traumas and the struggles she had to face during the last Olympic run. As a result, her therapist gave her an exercise dubbed the “worry hour” to save her from the agonies that many high-profile athletes face.

So, what is the worry hour? Simone Biles lines it out herself. According to her, she reserved an hour every day for writing down her worries and anxieties in her journal. For Biles, the worry hour was from 12 to 1 in the afternoon. She also outlined how she’d forget her problems by the end of the exercise.

Biles recounted in her interview with People magazine how she had a case of anxiety and how she’d use the worry hour technique to help her, “…so she tells me in my worry journal to put from 12 to 1 pm — that’s the time I’ve selected — and anything I’ve written down in my worry journal, I use that hour to worry about the things then,”

Biles’ mental health agonies
When Biles withdrew herself back in July from the finals, most of the response was quite positive. However, Biles had since come forth with her mindset in those moments. For her, the core meaning of attending the prestigious games was to win medals and enjoy her sport. The latter, she recounted, was missing.
