Gymnastics has experienced a paradigm shift after serious competition around the world. This year, a sixteen-year-old French gymnast was impacted by the tightening of restrictions that vary around the world. After receiving an osteochondritis diagnosis, undergoing surgeries, and taking a career break, the doctor gave her the go-ahead to compete. Despite being the all-around, bars, and floor champion in 2019 and the uneven bars champion in 2021, the national team doctor did not exonerate her, leaving her at crossroads.

Ditching the national team, she decided to compete for another country that cleared her of the restrictions. However, her journey to the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championship faced yet another obstacle after she had previously undergone public scrutiny and recovery

The 2023 African all-around champion Kaylia Nemour was quick to fix her 2022 standstill. Since her father was born in Algeria, her coaches proposed an eligibility to change her nationality and switched last spring. While the national transfer was still in the air, a recent development in her case was shared by @thegymterdotnet on Twitter(X). The post read, “Kaylia Nemour’s coach hasn’t been able to get his FIG license transferred to Algeria, as it looks like the French federation is blocking it.”

The tweet further said, “This would mean that Nemour would have to compete at worlds without her coach.”This puts a halt on the gymnast’s planned qualifiers for the spring, including global appearances. Despite her national transfer, the chances to compete in this year’s world championships are slim. Worlds serve as the main qualifying event for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Nemour’s chances of competing next could now be confined to the individual apparatus events at the 2024 World Cups and continental championships.

Initially, the French federation wouldn’t permit her departure. Nemour had to wait an entire year to compete for Algeria internationally at FIG-sponsored events (world cups, continental championships, and world championships). Eventually, a petition was filed to allow her to represent Algeria, and more than 6,000 people signed in support. Finally, on July 23, the International Gymnastics Federation granted her request to switch nations.

French-born gymnast’s post-hiatus battles

It was challenging for Nemour to return to the mats after a lengthy absence, coupled with her and her family’s legal fight with the French Federation to have her released on time. Her decision to compete at the African Championships went hand in hand with this.

The federation also allegedly threatened to withhold payments and not even consider for Paris. However, it appears that this is simply another obstacle in the path of the gym instructor’s pursuit of her Paris Olympics aspirations. Fans already refer to her as, ?As Good as Simone.?
