Tiger Woods‘s unhinged attitude has more often than not landed him in controversies. He may be a talented athlete on the field; however, his activities outside the course are not well appreciated. In 2009, a supposedly harmless comment by Woods upset an entire community of sports.

While it is important to have pride in one’s sport, it is also important to have compassion for other sports. But what was even more shocking than the statement itself was that Woods was not regretful. Despite the backlash, he did not apologize for his remark. However, he did try to mend his words to do some damage control.

Tiger Woods upset the NHL community

In 2009, Tiger Woods was promoting August’s PGA Championships during a teleconference at Oakland Hills in suburban Detroit. During the conference, Woods was asked which team he would be supporting for the upcoming match for the Stanley Cup between Detroit and Pittsburgh.

While the question was harmless, the answer did more harm than intended. His reply didn’t sit well with the Hockey fans. Laughing at the question, Woods replied by saying that he couldn’t care less about the match. He added that he would prefer talking about the Dodgers. He went as far as saying that no one watches the game anymore.

I don’t really care. Let’s talk about the Dodgers. I don’t think anybody really watches hockey anymore,” said the Righty, as reported by SportsNet. His answer, in return, backfired as it offended countless NHL fans who thought that the statement disrespected the game. Woods received heavy backlash for his statement.

Woods remained unapologetic

Despite the heavy backlash, Tiger Woods remained defiant. While he did not issue an apology for his remark or acknowledge that it was disrespectful, he did try to do some damage control in his own way. Woods was vocal about the fact that he was reprimanded for his statement.

He added that his statement what taken out of context. He did not mean what everyone thought he did. Woods further added that he does love the sport. Apparently, he enjoys watching it in the stadium rather than from the comfort of his home. “In person, it’s absolutely incredible, what they’re able to do and what they can do. TV doesn’t do justice to that,” he added.

Woods further said that he was trying to be funny with his original statement. However, the entire thing blew out of proportion. “I said what I said and I was trying to be funny about it, but people didn’t perceive it that way,” said the star golfer.
