The Michigan Wolverines recently defeated the Washington Huskies to lift the NCAA football Championship trophy. The Wolverines cruised perfectly in the 2023-24 season to clinch a nail-biting finals win. While several Michigan fans cheered for their favorite team, the cheers of Dave Portnoy were probably the loudest.

While Michigan’s final matchup was against Washington, they also had to pull a do-or-die win against Alabama in the semifinals. Unfortunately, this semifinal loss marked the final coaching season of Alabama’s head coach, Nick Saban. While everyone is paying homage to the NCAA coaching legend, Dave Portnoy joined the ride with his quirky shenanigan.

Dave Portnoy took to X and added a tweet regarding the retirement of Nick Saban. He wrote, “People have been going down memory lane and recounting stories with Nick Saban and posting pics. So I figured I’d join in. It was Jan 1, 2024. The Grand Daddy of them all. Alabama vs Michigan. The game went to Ot. On 4th and 3 Michigan stuffed Bama and I won a million dollars.”

Apparently, Dave Portnoy is talking about the one million dollars he won after placing a bet on Michigan against Alabama. While Portnoy got worried during halftime of the Rose Bowl game, the Michigan Wolverines eventually pulled through and won the game. Now that he is free of all his worries, Portnoy’s unruly side has come out stronger than before.

His tweet comes in direct contrast to how several renowned football personalities are speaking about Saban. However, this didn’t stop Dave Portnoy from taking a shot at him. Notably, Nick Saban has made several heavy contributions to the growth of Alabama’s football team.

Moreover, the 72-year-old also restored Alabama’s status as a national collegiate powerhouse. Saban coached the team for 17 seasons and secured six NCAA championships in this time frame. This is a far better result than the track record of the Michigan Wolverines who won their first title since 1948.

The chest-thumping greatness that only recently resurfaced

The Michigan Wolverines may have won 11 NCAA championships, but none of them had come in recent times. In fact, their last championship win goes back as far as 1948. Since then, the team has had a fallow run for 75 long years. Despite this, Dave Portnoy has been blowing the trumpet of Michigan non-stop.

The team did end its title drought in 1997, but it was a shared stint with the Nebraska Huskers back then. While Michigan’s current win is surely laudable, they still aren’t great enough. Especially when Dave Portnoy is aiming to get the fundamental rights to dissing a football legend.
