Nathan’s run at the Olympics
Nathan Chen became the first United States skater to win gold in the men’s field since Evan Lysacek in 2010. Scoring a combined total of 332.60, Chen placed first with a considerable margin of 12.55 from the silver medalist. On the other hand, Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama (310.05) and Shoma Uno (293.00) gained a 2-3 finish for Japan.
Nathan had been a favorite for the title, even back in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. However, still green on the global stage, he flubbed three major jumping passes in the short program, unable to take the pressure and falling to 17th position. In a turn of events, in the free program at Pyeongchang, Chen wrote history by packing 6 quads in his program and rising to 5th in combined scores, earning the highest scores in the free skate.
By Beijing, Chen was a seasoned skater and performed two almost-clean skates, even setting a record for the short program score at 113.97 points.
