The Pan American Games 2023 was a rollercoaster ride for the USA Field Hockey team. They kicked off the tournament with a strong performance against Trinidad and Tobago, asserting their dominance on the field. However, as the games progressed, they faced increasingly challenging opponents. Their second-place finish against Uruguay secured them a spot in the semi-finals and an FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifier in January 2024. Yet, the Argentinian team handed them a disappointing defeat, as shared by USA Field Hockey on Instagram.

Despite this setback, Team USA’s performance at the Pan American Games 2023 was nothing short of commendable. Their determination and skill shone through in every match, making them a force to be reckoned with. As pointed out by USA Field Hockey, “USA held their ground, keeping Argentina to their lowest goal total throughout the tournament”. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to secure a direct Olympic qualifier spot. However, there is a twist.

Hope for the Olympics remains

The remaining quota seats for the 2024 Olympics will be assigned to qualified NOCs with a high ranking in two separate FIH Olympic qualification events. The top three teams at the end of each event will secure a spot in the twelve-team field for Paris 2024. The U.S. team showcased their resilience and determination in the thrilling match against Argentina, a team marking their 15th straight appearance in the finals. As Argentina advances to the finals, Team USA sets its sights on the bronze medal, to be decided on November 3.

If they can clinch the third spot, they will secure their places at an FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifier, taking place in January 2024. This will give them another chance to book their Olympic berth. As they gear up for the bronze medal match, we eagerly anticipate Team USA’s comeback from this setback.
