A former US Champion fenced his way to victory, yet again. This ended the drought of 14 years in the Veteran World Championship. The fencing event of the Veteran World Championship is being organized in Daytona Beach, Florida. The events will be concluded on 16th October. It is safe to say that veteran fencing athletes of the USA have proved their determination.
On the very first day of the 2023 FIE Veteran Fencing World Championships, Team USA won a whopping nine medals. Julie Seal made history by becoming the first American to win a world title in two different weapons. On day two, the American men?s saber team ended the five-year tournament streak of Italy to come on top of the podium. Team USA kept the medal coming on day three as they won more world titles. However, none was as grand as the feat that was achieved after 14 long years.
Just a ‘Normile’ day in Fencing world championship

Jon Normile is a three-time US champion. He competed in the World Championship six times in his career, winning the silver medal in the 1992 Pan American games and adding a bronze in 1999 World Cup. Jon Normile competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in ?p?e event of Individual fencing. In 2006, he was inducted in the Columbia Athletics Hall of Fame. His status in no short of a legend, but he is not done yet.
Normile (Medeo Fencing Club) broke more than a decade-long drought for USA veteran fencing. Winning the title of the largest event of the tournament. This is his first individual medal while he has three team titles at Vet Worlds. Not relying on luck was the key to the win. Normile said that it is all about preparation. In an exclusive interview, he told Usafencing.org that it was all about preparing for the match. He even lost 10 pounds while getting in shape for it.
In an instagram story posted by USA Fencing, they broke the news of Normile winning the first individual medal, breaking more than decade old jinx.
Team USA’s dominant medal run

Apart from Normile’s heroics, there were other significant happenings for Team USA, too. Julie Seal created history by winning the world championship in the two different weapons. No other American at any level has achieved this feat. Lydia Fabry proved that age is just a number. She won her third individual world championship, winning it in her 50s and her 60s.

Jane Eyre won her eighth Vet World Championship, creating another achievement for the fencing history books. From Normile to Jane Eyre Team USA has dominated the world championships in individual and team categories, making it one of the most successful medal run in the history of veteran fencing for Team USA.
