The fencing world is not feeling any of the merry vibes of this Christmas season. One of America’s greatest fencing heroes is facing disgrace for his alleged misconduct. The ensuing cacophony from this catastrophic discovery has drowned out all of the cheers that once echoed through the hallowed halls of the fencing arena.

Ivan Lee who until yesterday was at the helm of the USA Fencing board was fired from his position after his misconduct in regards to the SafeSport Code came to light. The Tokyo Olympics champion fell on his own saber and took proactive steps to save face. Here’s what happened.

USA Fencing announced his suspension via a statement that read, “In line with our unwavering commitment to the safety of our athletes and the fencing community, we immediately reported the information to the U.S. Center for SafeSport, and have taken immediate action to suspend Mr. Lee”. The 42-year-old Hall of Famer did not wish to accrue more shame and promptly resigned from his chairman position. Ivan Lee’s accolades that span the course of two decades, beginning with the 2004 Olympics, to the recent consecutive victory at the Vet-40 National Championship, could not cushion his fall.

His statement after winning his third national title stands in stark contradiction to the present circumstances. He had said, “I’m beyond blessed to still be able to fence…Winning is icing on the cake, but for me, just being able to compete at my age and remain healthy and enjoy the sport that I love is so amazing”. The LIU fencing coach did not anticipate that his lasting legacy would be marred to this extent. However, he isn’t the only one to face the sentence of exile, as similar occurrences have happened with many of his peers.

A troubling trend in the fencing world

SafeSport works as an independent body to monitor the activities of the athletes in the Olympic journey. Recently, the organization has flagged many members of USA Fencing for violating the code of conduct. It started with Olympian Curtis McDowald in November when he received a temporary suspension. Then, another U.S. fencer named Alen Hadzic, who took part in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, was permanently banned from the sport.

SafeSport also declared Mauro Hamza, a national-level fencing coach, permanently ineligible. Celebrated fencer Andrew Doddo was also facing the ax in July before the committee closed its case against him. Now, Ivan Lee’s suspension has once again rocked the fencing community from the bottom and is set to have long-term repercussions.
