Alex Honnold is widely regarded as the greatest ‘Free Solo’ climber ever since he charted the El Capitan. He became the first and, to date, the only person to climb the notorious mountain in Yosemite Park. But that’s not the only ‘first’ Honnold experienced in the past few years. People familiar with the 2018 documentary ‘Free Solo’ would remember Sanni McCandless, besides Honnold’s daring feat. Honnold and McCandless’ love story bloomed amidst his risky venture of rock climbing, compelling him to take tough calls at times. However, as of 2022, Honnold has found bliss with McCandless and looks forward to a life with her. Here’s looking into their life amidst danger.

Honnold met McCandless in 2015 at a book signing, and they soon started dating. They got married in 2020 during the lockdown, and in 2022 welcomed a new member to their family. However, things weren’t so rosy for Honnold after all.

During an interview with ‘Fatherly’ magazine on 24th May 2022, the interviewer questioned Hannold, “Were you reluctant to get married?” Hannold replied, “I always planned to get married, eventually. Even at my most aggressive ‘young 20s guy striving to do something’, I still realized that you’re just not going to have a great family scene if you’re too single-mindedly focused on specific goals and too aggro about it all. I’ve always wanted to be well-adjusted at some point”.

Reluctance or not, Honnold and McCandless were always going strong, despite Honnold’s doubts. The documentary Free Solo also covered Honnold and McCandless’ awkward love story.

Honnold became a father at age 36 and lives in a quaint house in Las Vegas with his family. A van is almost always parked outside for whenever nature beckons. Their daughter, June J Honnold, was born in February and is nearly a year old now. Honnold admits in the interview that he wasn’t a great boyfriend to McCandless but is a much better husband.
