The Defender Burghley Horse Trials has been a major international sporting and social event for over 50 years. It inculcates the world’s top equestrians and over 170,000 visitors. It is the elite test of dressage, cross-country, and showjumping at the highest level within the sport for the ideal horses and riders globally. An iconic equestrian like Zara Tindall was a contender in it.
It was a special one for her as the course was designed by her father, Captain Mark Philips 30 years before the pandemic. Things are a little different there now, but Tindall still relates to the similarities to her father’s design. She expressed, “I don’t think they are hugely different.” She further added, “They obviously have a slightly different style with the combinations and technicality of it all but essentially it’s still Burghley with big fences.”
She connects to this event and is happy to be performing here. She said that it is an incredible place to ride around, it is always a little difficult here and the competition is amazing. Here, it is completely about the test of horse and rider and their partnership in the training. Tindall even though she came back after 20 years, she still gave a tremendous performance.
