Funny Cide was a fan-favorite horse who also became the first New York-bred horse to win the Kentucky Derby. Tragically, the equine athlete died at the age of 23 on Sunday, July 16th. According to the Paulick Report, Cide was going through Colic complications during the last phase of his life.
Funny Cide was the highest-earning horse New York bred horse during his retirement. His fans nicknamed him the ‘Gutsy Gelding’; his amazing career stood with an 11-6-8 set with $3,529,412 earned. Cide used to live in the Kentucky Horse Park’s Hall of Champions in Lexington after his retirement in 2007, which was announced by his trainer Barclay Tagg.

The equestrian world celebrates Funny Cide
The supervisor at the Hall of Champions, Rob Willis also shared his story with Funny Cide. Willis said, the horse was a rockstar on tracks and was one of the smartest horses he has ever been around. Jose Santos, the rider who won Kentucky Derby with Funny Cide expressed his feelings by saying, “It made me cry when I found out, it was such an unbelievable ride we had.” He also gave credit to the horse for his fame.

Among other equestrians, Funny Cide’s trainer Tagg also expressed his feelings on Cide’s death. The world mourns the tragedy, while also praising him for his thrilling career.
