The day for Louisiana Cup Day is near. The annual event will be held at Louisiana Downs on the 5th of August. The event will feature nine races of which six races are stakes. The stakes are the competition where Louisiana-bred horses show their talent. The stakes carry the purses of $75,000.
Louisiana Cup Filly and Mare Spirit are one of the stakes. In this event, fillies and mares from across the state come to participate. Among them, will be the defending champion Free Like a Girl. The filly seems to be all set for the stakes which she considers her own turf.

The reigning champion arrives at the six-furlong turf all prepared with the aim for victory. She entered this event after showing an incredible performance at $100,000 Mademoiselle at Evangeline Downs. The four-year-old filly started that race with strength. Worth $951,578 she passed the first quarter mile in 22.50 seconds and the half-mile in 46.22 seconds. She completed the 5 1/2 furlongs of fillies and mares race in 1:05.17. Free Like a Girl won the race by one and three-fourths length over her nearest rival Beleout.

In that event, she claimed two more achievements. One was that she had won all five races that she had participated in at Evangeline Downs. The second achievement was she was selected for the Louisiana-bred horse of the year honors. Owned by Gerald Bruno, Jr; Carl J, Deville; Chasey Deville Pomier, and Jerry Caroom, the filly is in form. The trainer Chasey Pomier is taking good care of her and always tries to keep her happy.

Speaking before the race, the trainer said, “We couldn’t be more proud of her“. He further said, “She fought hard, but giving eleven pounds was a lot to ask. Free Like a Girl means so much to our team. She’s getting close to earning $1 million, but even more importantly, she brings new people to the sport.” Tim Thornton who ridden her in her last race; won two stakes this year under his watch, shall ride her at the coming race. To date, the filly’s race journey has been formidable and all set to claim the title once again.

Free Like a Girl the four-year-old filly is the daughter of El Deal and Flashy Prize. She is bred by Kim Renee Stover and her sister Lisa Osborne. The filly started racing in 2021. She had eleven stakes win in her career of which four of them have been this year. They are Louisiana Legends Mademoiselle, EVD Distaff S., LA Bred Premier Distaff, and Bob F. Wright Memorial. She was honored as the year 2021 Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association Champion 2-year-old Filly and as Champion 3-year-old Filly in 2021. In her entire career, she had 28 starts of which she secured first position in 13 starts. This year in seven starts she won four and her earnings this year are $248,450 to date.

The four-year filly has won four races this year and keeping in mind her performance at the last race she is one of the contenders for Louisiana Cup Filly and Mare Spirit. The reigning is likely to repeat her last race form and claim the title.
