Identifying flawless equines is a rare skill possessed by only a few across the globe. Nevertheless, Dean DeRenzo exhibits an innate talent for recognizing a guaranteed equestrian prospect. This ability was prominently displayed during a recent equine transaction he conducted. Participating in the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, DeRenzo successfully procured a descendant of Tapit for a considerable sum of $275,000. His decision was underpinned by his understanding of the remarkable lineage that traces back to Tapit – the preeminent North American sire in terms of earnings, and a prominent figure among leaders in grade 1 and graded stakes winners.
But this was only half of the trade. DeRenzo, given his equestrian expertise, was quite aware of the potential of his investment. However, the price that his horse commanded at Saratoga completely shocked DeRenzo and his partners.
Dean DeRenzo’s equestrian Foresight
The colt, assigned the consignment Hip 129, revealed itself to be a lucrative pin-hooking prospect. On the evening of August 8th, during the second night of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, the colt fetched an impressive $1.2 million. This promising horse, descending from the Tiznow mare Plenty O’Toole, was acquired by Whisper Hill Farm. With a discerning eye for identifying pin-hooking prospects, DeRenzo and his partners excel in weanling and yearling sales. Their approach zeroes in on the upper echelons of the market, guided by the belief that exceptional horses can attain extraordinary feats.
According to a BloodHorse report, while talking about the sale, DeRenzo said, “I thought he was one of the best colts in the sale. You know, when we bought him, we absolutely fell in love with him. He was a little bit smaller because it was November, and he grew and grew and grew and he just does everything right.” Such dedication to raising a champion also involved ensuring the colt’s appetite was satisfied. Tapit’s legacy has produced exceptional horses such as Flightline, Essential Quality, and Tonalist. DeRenzo noted the colt’s robust build, emphasizing that Tapit’s distinctive hip structure sets his offspring apart. However, DeRenzo and his partners not only parted with their prized thoroughbred but also secured future investments that will prove profitable for them later on.
Dean DeRenzo’s future bets
Among the star-studded offerings was a Not This Time colt, proudly presented as Hip 122. This prized acquisition commanded an impressive price tag of $900,000.
