In the wake of Mud’s mysterious disappearance, Sullivan, the 22-year-old owner, along with his grandmother, Elizabeth “Libby” C. Bigham, summoned a devoted group of riders and proponents. Tristan’s grandmother expressed to Index Journal, “When we put word out that we couldn’t find Mud, people came out of the woodwork to help. The overwhelming support we received from my Belton 40SC chapter and beyond was truly humbling.” This resulted in the inspiring amalgamation of over 30 to 40 volunteers, gathering in a unified stand to bestow their invaluable efforts on this search mission. They gathered to investigate the shadowy depths of the wild, at the sublime Sumter National Forest’s Fell Hunt Camp.
Despite the difficult situation and not having a single clue, the search party was filled with hope. Fragments of broken saddle horn and unique hoof prints found close to Big Curl Tail Creek only served to further ignite anticipation that Mud would be found soon. Notices were spread, social media was immediately tapped to generate further attention, and the NetPosse nonprofit organization gave vital support by disseminating news of Mud’s absence.
As the hunt became increasingly extensive, acts of benevolence from rodeo kids, a warm-hearted elderly couple, and even a regional fire department with a drone showed the remarkable humanity that filled every aspect of the mission. Tristan’s intense dedication and relentless persistence finally paid off when Mr. Sam McNeil, one of the strangers, joyfully informed him of Mud’s presence in a nearby field, leisurely eating the succulent grass.
Miraculous reunion and lessons learned
“The moment I saw Mud standing in that field, happily grazing, it was an overwhelming mix of relief and joy. I can’t express my gratitude enough to Mr. McNeil and the park ranger who ensured her safety,” Tristan expressed. When he heard the news, Tristan immediately told his grandmother.
Thoroughly impressed, Tristan couldn’t contain his joy and released a hearty laugh of relief, as he now knew the mare he so cherished would be safe and secure in the friendly atmosphere of his grandmother’s home.

Recognizing the importance of keeping the search parties restricted to designated trails, Tristan underscores how it could have been beneficial in not interfering with any evidence they might have neglected. He emphasizes the importance of identifying horses through measures such as tattooing, microchipping, and GPS tracker technology to ensure their safety and swift recovery.
