Thunder Mountain Equestrian Trails, a remote sanctuary, provides a refuge from the daily hustle and bustle. However, even in this modern era, adventure beckons, and nature continues to present challenges. On the 13th of October 2023, at 10 p.m., the serene Thunder Mountain Equestrian Trails transformed into a scene of urgency and cooperation.
Elkland Search and Rescue and Jay Township Volunteer Fire Company received a call for help from the Pennsylvania State Police Ridgway Barracks. Their mission: locate a missing rider and her horse. The situation was critical, as the 55-year-old rider had been last seen around 2:30 p.m. at the Gas Line Camping Area. The remote location added to the complexity of the operation, with most emergency responders not arriving until nearly 11:30 p.m. but they didn’t give up. Recently, the Elkland Search and Rescue team posted on Facebook about this incident. The success of the nighttime rescue hinged on the establishment of a Unified Command, which coordinated various responders, including Elkland Search and Rescue, Jay Township Volunteer Fire Company, the PA State Police, Bennetts Valley Ambulance, the PA Game Commission, and Aerialjimpa from Commodore. Notably, local hunters also pitched in, underscoring the importance of unity in search and rescue efforts.
In a challenging search, teams employed ATVs, UTVs, and man trackers to thoroughly search equestrian trails and nearby roads. Considering impending adverse weather conditions, drones were contemplated as helicopters couldn’t be used. Around 12:45 a.m., a breakthrough occurred when a mobile search team located the missing rider and her horse several miles from the camping area. Both rider and horse had wisely halted their journey at a trail-road intersection, opting to wait for daylight.
Promptly, emergency medical responders arrived to assess the rider’s condition, while another rider examined the horse. Once cleared medically, the rider was transported back to the Command Post via vehicle, accompanied by a friend and fellow rider. The horse was led back by the companion rider, all under the watchful eye of emergency responders. This joint effort was essential, especially during nighttime travel.
The rider safely made it back to the Command Post around 1:20 a.m., while the horse, accompanied by a new rider, arrived at approximately 3:30 a.m., coinciding with the onset of rainfall. After seeing the Facebook post, a flood of prayers and expressions of appreciation poured in.
