Philip McGuane and Orphea Hq entered the Southern Arches CSI3* Grand Prix on January 13. It was a special occasion in the equestrian showjumping community as the season’s first ‘Saturday Night Lights’ grand prix. Therefore, the Nick Granat-designed field over tracks was packed with participants. The Wellington International was an important event for Philip McGuane and his equine partner as it signals the start of the 2024 FEI season. With a Paris Olympics ticket on the line, none of the entrants wanted to accede an inch to another opponent. In such a thrilling battle, Phillip McGuane and Orphea leaped into the winner’s circle in the fifth spot. The Evergate Stables family was overjoyed, and Jennifer Gates commended their effort in the organization’s IG stories.
Sharing the snap of the equestrian duo mid-leap on the Evergate Stables Instagram stories, she wrote, “So proud of this pair!” The beautiful picture was from an official post where the caption read, “@philipmcguane & Orphea 🌸 jumping to 5th place ⭐️ in the CSI3* Southern Arches Grand Prix – their first 1.55m, and night class together! 💪Congratulations Philip and #teamevergatestables!!!” A British Olympic champion earned the top honors in Wellington on Saturday, but he conceded the tough challenge.

Ben Maher acknowledges tough competition
Ben Maher and Enjeu de Grisien won the $140,000 Southern Arches CSI3* Grand Prix on Saturday. A shoulder injury that derailed his 2023 WEF campaign fueled his fierce run to the topmost rung of the podium. However, the competition from the opponents humbled Maher despite the victory. He said, “It’s a good atmosphere and you have some of the best riders in the world which gives top sport.”

Moreover, the Olympian had to concede to the “difficult course,” which became even more challenging in the presence of the timer. However, like any devoted equestrian, Ben Maher credited his horse for the victory.
