When a miniature Shetland pony was diagnosed with an unknown disease, the pony’s owner was rightly devastated. A parasite had entered the spinal area of the horse. Because of the parasite, the horse got sick enough that the chances of him being put down increased manifold. The Shetland, named Oberon, was diagnosed in June last year. Oberon is a performing pony, a part of a troupe.

Jema Leopold, the owner of the pony, in an interview with Horse and Hound, said, “We thought we would have to say goodbye to him. However, by the next day, the pony got so weak that he could not even walk. That’s when the owner and the doctors realized something serious was at play. Oberon had to be taken to the Leahurst equine hospital, and after an MRI, the real problem was discovered.

It is bespoke of the strength of Oberon, that even after a near-death experience, the pony, through his actions, let his owner know that he wants to continue working. Jema Leopold added, “The vet said his good condition helped his recovery, and the work helps keep him strong. He’s basically a little miracle, and he’s so determined. I didn’t give up on him because he didn’t give up.” The vigor of Oberon is the miracle that both the horse and the owner needed. In another equestrian miracle story…
