An endurance ride is one of the most famous equestrian rides which includes covering long distances. Many endurance riding races are organized internationally by International Federation For Equestrian Sports. These long-distance races are based on time records, and the winner is determined by covering the race in the least set of time.

Winston to Longreach is also one of the famous endurance rides which cover up to 220 kilometers of equestrian journey. It is one of the leading equestrian events in Queensland, Australia. This year the race is taking place after nearly 40 years since 1988 when the event supported to creation of the Stockholm Hall of Fame.

The Winston to Longreach endurance ride is back on the track after forty years and it was scheduled for 29th to 30th July 2023. 32 great jockeys with their equine racer took part in this tough race. The riders paved the way for 220 kilometers of distance in this blistering summer month. Some changes were also noticed in the event, such as, earlier a gun was shot to signal the start however, now it is just “off you go.” This race was once a prime point of the Western Queensland calendar from 1980 to 1988.

This year the race was brought back to celebrate the 100 years of Queensland’s Country Women Association. According to ABC News, this 2023 endurance ride also assisted in raising some funds for Royal Flying Doctor Service and Angel Flight. The event gave immense nostalgia to the riders and two spectators who were there during the race.

A rider, Julia Creek Cattleman Jack Makim stated in 1987, “And it helps to remind them about that old Australian quality we used to pride – that quality of never giving up.” This year the race had some of the great legends and introduced some new equestrian faces to the world.

Winston to Longreach Equestrian race and incredible riders

Spectators from across entire Australia came to witness this legendary race and jockeys were prepared to rock the event. However, in this tropical weather, only half of the 32 riders could finish the race. Kevin Dellow a rider from 1987 attended the event to relieve the moments. The 2023 winner Andrea Laws King completed the race in 17 hours and 30 minutes. One more amazing thing was captured, in this tough race many big and experienced riders pulled out but a ten-year-old girl, Taylor Grogan finished the race. These sorts of head-turning moments are sometimes noticed in the sports of equestrians. Her mother Saasha Grogan secured the runner-up position with a time set of 18:03 hours.

This Winston to Longreach endurance is one of the toughest equestrian races which stretches the first mail route, Cobb and Co in Queensland. The focal point of this event is animal welfare. To ensure animals’ well-being and health, several stop points were given in the race. The event organizer Craig Renner ensured the horse’s health, food, and water at each stop. He said, “They’re our mates at the end of the day,” indicating their equine priority. It was a very successful event and spectators, riders, organizers, and other members said they are honored to be a part of it.
