CBC Canada reports, Hansen, a 47-year-old colonel and CF-18 pilot, is set to become the first Canadian to travel to the moon as part of the Artemis II mission. For now, he is preparing for a unique challenge as this year’s Stampede parade marshal. With limited equestrian experience, Hansen candidly acknowledges, “You just get thrown into things and you just gotta make it work. So I’ll lean on the people that are around me. I’m sure it’ll work out.” Having spent seven transformative years stationed at CFB Cold Lake, Hansen shares a deep affinity for Alberta. It also happens to be the birthplace of his three children.

The Artemis II is the first of its kind since the Apollo missions in 1972. Notable past marshals of the Stampede parade include astronauts Chris Hadfield (2001 and 2013), Olympians Kaillie Humphries (2015), and Catriona Le May Doan (2002). Other notable personalities include former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau (1971 and 1978), Prince Charles (1977), singer and actor Bing Crosby (1959), and even Spuds MacKenzie, a bull terrier featured in Bud Light beer ads in the ’80s (1988).
