Weather plays a significant role in equestrian sports. The horse races often get canceled due to bad weather. In case of heavy rain, lightning, heat, poor air quality, and other climate-related factor are to be considered before any race. In the wake of extreme heat, the equestrian race course is hit by a catastrophe.

There are forecasts of high heat in the United States and parts of Canada. Therefore, many race tracks in these areas have decided to cancel races at their track. The races will resume once the weather gets suitable for it. The news has saddened the equestrian enthusiasts but the life of stocks and humans are the priority of every race course.

Extreme heat cancels equestrian races

Many equestrian races with a total base purse worth more than 24 million have canceled their races due to extreme heat and have rescheduled them for later dates. The news of the cancellation came from Woodbine, Canada. In their statement, they mentioned that after consultation with veterinarians and horsemen, they have decided to cancel Thursday’s eight live Thoroughbred races. They were doing so as a precaution for equine welfare and the safety of all racing participants. Woodbine will monitor the weather to decide on Friday’s race. Thursday’s race is temporarily rescheduled on 30th July or another schedule depending on the weather.

 

The Maryland Jockey Club also decided to reschedule its nine-race live program at Laurel Park to the 3rd of August, Thursday due to excessive heat. There were races that were to go on the 29th of July at Colonial Dawns and Ellis Park, but they all got canceled. Colonial Dawns have rescheduled its races to the 2nd of August, Wednesday.

An additional date will be announced later 30th July race. Ellis Park has decided to schedule its race for the 31st of July and the 1st of August. This is not the first time that such a cancellation is happening due to heat. These types of race cancellations have occurred in the past too.

Equestrian races got canceled in the past

Extreme heat is a weather phenomenon that occurs regularly all over the globe. In the past, there are many instances where races were canceled due to high heat. Last year in June the prestigious Churchill Downs canceled its races due to heat. It was the second time in its 147 years of track history that a race got canceled due to heat. The last time it happened was in 2012. In 2019, the Saratoga Race Course canceled its races due to heat waves. The races were adjusted on other dates.

In Britain, several horse racing events were canceled in 2022 due to extreme heat. Ellis Park has also canceled its races and rescheduled them for 2022. Monmouth Park in the year 2021 canceled its eleven races on 21st July and rescheduled it for the 26th due to extreme heat. Heat waves are part of the equestrian sport and lead to cancelations of races where they are extreme. This is done in the wake of keeping the priority of the horses and their riders safety first.
