It was one of the happiest days for Brad Cox at FanDuel Sportsbook and Horse Racing. The multiple stakes winner trainer’s horses were taking part in the $250,000 St. Louis Derby, a mile and a one-sixteenth-distance race, and to his surprise his debutant won the race. Cox’s other trained and the favorite horse finished at the second place in a nail-biting contest.

At the end of the race, Cox had the solace that his both trained horses occupied the first two positions and the last stage duel was also among them. The winner Tabeguache was a surprise package at the event as he stunned the spectators with his audacious run in the final stretch.

On Saturday night, all were ready for the $250,000 esteemed equestrian stakes race. Brad Cox trained two horses – Gold Square owned Slip Mahoney and Jeff Drown owned Tabeguache. Last year stakes winning trainer Kenny McPeek also had his two trained horses taking part in the stakes – Denington and Hayes Strike. Prior to race, Slip Mahoney was the favorite with 8-5 odds and Tabeguache had 8-1 odds. Slip Mahoney arrived at the event after winning a mile allowance race at Saratoga last month with earlier experience of stakes races. But for Tabeguache, this was his maiden stakes race and it came at the event after winning his last two races.

At the start of the race, Billy Jack and Cristian Torres took charge and set the pace of the race. They reached the quarter mile in 25.03 seconds and the half in 49.34 seconds. Worth $201,650, Tabeguache railed behind the leaders for six-furlong, then moved away from the fence to be in the mid-stretch to take on the leaders. Slip Mahoney opened up and took the lead on the last turn and created a two-length gap. But, Tabeguache had a lot of pace left and took a duel with stable mate for the last furlong. In the last stretch, Tabeguache put his head in the front and won the race. Kenny McPeek’s trained Denington secured the third position. Tabeguache completed the race in  1:46.42 and grabbed his career’s first stake win.
