Natasha Baker, a determined equestrian from London, England, faced challenges at an early age. Contracting transverse myelitis at 14 months left her legs weak and devoid of feeling. Riding horses became her therapeutic journey, strengthening her muscles. At nine, she ventured into competitive riding with the Riding for the Disabled Association in Buckinghamshire.

The 2000 Summer Paralympics sparked a dream within her ten-year-old heart. Despite her leg weakness, Baker astoundingly trains her horses to respond to her voice and saddle movements. She competes in grade III Paralympic classification. Now as a mother, this equestrian holds onto hope for the Paris Olympics.

Para equestrian champion Baker juggles motherhood and comeback

Following her success at the World Para Dressage Championships in Herning, the 33-year-old para dressage rider discovered she was pregnant. Baker and her husband, Marc, welcomed their son, Joshua Fio, on April 25. Horse and Hound reported that the Olympic champion introduced Joshua to her gold medalist equine, Keystone Dawn Chorus, known as Lottie, and described it as a “gorgeous” moment. She, embracing motherhood, stated, “I’m loving every second, even the nights that aren’t so good.” The 6x Gold medalist’s emotional journey continued as she reflected on her time in Herning, expressing, “I was very emotional in Herning, so being pregnant was probably having an impact.”

She took a break from riding due to nausea but plans to return for the Paris Paralympics in 2024. Baker follows equestrian events through live streams and stays connected to the sport. She enjoys time with Joshua while Lottie stays fit with trainer Lisa Hopkins. The Para Olympic champion eagerly awaits her comeback, fueling her passion for family and riding. She cherishes her newfound role as a mother while preparing for future victories. Throughout her career, Natasha Baker has consistently showcased her talent in the world of para-dressage.

Baker’s Para Dressage Triumphs

At the 2012 London Paralympics, she clinched two gold medals. It set a new Paralympic record in the individual championship and freestyle test grade II events. Continuing her winning streak, Baker secured three gold medals at the 2016 Rio Paralympics in the individual championship, in freestyle test grade II, and team categories. Her excellence and dedication earned her honors such as the MBE and OBE.
